Archie is on meds right now, correct? I would wait until he is done with the meds - you don't want to confuse his tummy any more than it is. Once he is done with the meds and cleared of any other tummy upsets, I would cold turkey change since you are going to the grain-free giving him the pumpkin or unflavored yogurt as you get him used to the new food. Do wait to change though because his tummy is upset enough.
If he is having a tummy upset, you can give him some unflavored yogurt or canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) with his meal. Did you switch to Acana's grained or grain free? If you switched to grain-free, there might be some tummy upset and lots of gas as their system adjusts. When we switched over, it took a couple of bags before the dogs were not gassy. It might be worth it to just switch him over and get him off the Science Diet; just add the yogurt or canned pumpkin.
Thanks for the friend request. I have to say that Archie is one of my favorite doodle names. It really suits them.
I would go with the best food I could afford. I think Fromm or Acana are "better" than the two I suggested previously. We 'bit the bullet' and started feeding our dogs Orijen. One of ours had some serious skin issues, so we switched from a different recommended one, just to give him the best possible Omega balance. Some dogs have more sensitive tummies and one brand doesn't set as well as another - even though both are quality kibbles.
Hi Sam, I can't find your final discussion post. It can get confusing. I get the young and not lots of money part, but want to feed the dog well - sounds just like my kids. Grainfree is more expensive, but usually a better way to go - and a more efficient food digestively. I would choose one of the cheaper foods on the recommended list - Blue Buffalo or Canadae.
