Hello Elizabeth - I think you are taking the right path with asking about the characteristics of a labradoodle before getting one as a member of your family.

I started with doodles in 2003 when our old shephard died and our standard poodle was beside himself with grief.  My brother-in-law said why not try a labradoodle since we loved labs and poodles.  So the search began.  Take a look at the photos on my page to see all my doodles.  Right now, I have three.  We have had all sizes and colors and breeds.  I really think the F1b goldendoodles are the best dogs and wanted another one when Groucho Too passed away in 2015.  My breeder (in WA) was not breeding them right then and I decided on a sheepadoodle.  She is the black/white coloring just like her phantom poodle father.

I think you will be very satisfied with a doodle.  They are not too large, although Hondo was 105 pounds.  You should be able to get one in the 50-60 pound range.  Labs or goldens bred to a miniature poodle might suit you well.  There are plenty of great breeders out there who breed just about every type of doodle there could be.  My breeder in WA is far for you but everyone ships if you don't mind that.  Sometimes I get a plane ticket and go to pick up a puppy, but clear across the states is probably too much.  Plenty of good breeders in your section of the country.

Keep up your search.  All of my doodles were non-shed or light shed and love baths and grooming.  It is a little work, but we all love the bonding that goes on with doing your own grooming.
