Judy,
These are the types of things I am currently working on with Bexter (manners, I guess you'd call it). I would definitely share your concerns with the trainer & ask for suggestions. Maybe even write them down. My trainer told me to do what some others here are saying: I keep a leash by the front door. When the doorbell rings, I leash him & make him sit. I have treats that I grab on my way to answer the door also. That way, he sits & I give him the treats. When he is eating the treats, then the person can approach him (if they wanted to pet him). He is more focused on the treats than the person & that seems to help. He is better actually when he doesn't know the person. He'll just sit there calmly. If he DOES know the person pretty well, he gets so excited it is harder. I know some people have their dog go to a certain spot - a mat, bed, or something - when the bell rings. Like people have said, you'll have to have lots of people come over so you can practice with him often.
