I don't think you are crazy at all.  We think that two are better than one (kids and dogs) and always have at least two (d0gs).  Problem is that they get very dependent on each other and a loss of a pet is absolutely traumatic to the remaining dog.  Your size choice is perfect and smaller dogs seem to be better as house pets, although we have had all sizes.  Hondo was a 105-lb labradoodle, Groucho Too a 85-lb goldendoodle, and Harpo is a 55-lb ALD.  We also have a 25-lb Jackapoo and he definitely holds his own with Harpo and other larger dogs.  He loves the big dogs at the dog park.

So, I don't think male or female really matters, but you may want to consider rehome or rescue.  There are all kinds of dogs out there that need homes.  Our jackapoo (Zeppo) was a rescue and he is a great little dog.  Just another idea for you.
