Hi Suzanne, "EPO" is evening primrose oil. Use 500 mg human softgels, start with one per day. If there is no loose stool (there most likely won't be) you can increase to twice a day. There are no side effects unless your dog has a seizure disorder, in which case it should not used, as it can lower the seizure threshold.
I'm sorry Teddy is having such difficulty, and I'm sure it's no fun for you, either. I'd never heard of goats milk helping allergies, but you could try it and see if it helps. I'll have to check the exact formula of probiotic (I'm not home to check) but it's one of the Swanson Vitamins brand and has several strains in it. I give only half a capsule to each doodle a day, so not a lot. They also get a couple tablespoons of yogurt 2x a day. I figure it doesnt hurt and can only help to keep their gut flora in good order. Have you had skin testing on Teddy to determine his exact allergies? It is the season where there's a lot of pollen in the air. Is it possible that is the cause of his flare? Sorry I can't offer more help. Have you checked with Karen of the Food Group? She's very knowledgeable of allergy related problems. I'll let you know the exact probiotic formulation ASAP.
Oh, and to answer your last question, the birds and dogs get along fine. Both Lucy and Oscar have a healthy respect for the birds and give them plenty of 'space' when they're out of their cages. It did take an adjustment period after bringing each puppy into the house, to get the birds use to each new 'interloper', but in total, only about a week each.
I'm so sorry about your Sophie passing. Yes, between the birds and the doodles I do have my hands full, but nothing I can't handle. I give the doods yogurt and probiotics daily just to keep their poos in good form. I started when Lucy had a digestive upset that sent her system into a tailspin a couple years ago. I don't ever want to have to go through that again, if I can help it. Do you feed a grain free food? Lucy gets grain free now after suffering a series of skin yeast infections. She hasn't had a problem since.
Hi Suzanne, re the goat's milk, I found plain nonfat/lowfat yogurt to be just as effective, if not more so, and a whole lot cheaper too. In addition I use a Swanson brand probiotic powder that I mix into their yogurt as well.
BTW, I see you also have a Citron-crested Cockatoo. I have a 17 yr old med. Citron/Eleanora mix Cockatoo and a 17yr old Major Mitchells Cockatoo (aka, Leadbeater Cockatoo). They're a couple of characters!

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The probiotic the doods get is Swanson Ultra Probiotic Complex.
