Allie's first counter surf and she ate.......

Wednesday afternoon I brought home some muffins from the office. We had had a meeting and there were some left over muffins so I brought two home for my son. I got a blueberry one and a chocolate chocolate chip one. These were the really BIG ones you can get at Costco. I bet you know where this is going.....so anyway, my son ate the blueberry one on the way home from school. When we got home he put the chocolate chocolate chip on the counter. Allie has NEVER shown any interest with anything on the counter. She has never counter surfed at all. She turned one in August and that has never been an issue with her. She is a mini so that probably has something to do with it. Anyway my son and I sit down and he starts his homework. I am quizing him to help him study for a test. I get up when I notice Allie is not around. She usually is where ever I am so this is unusual. I look around the kitchen and she is nowhere to be found. Then I notice the paper towel that the muffin had been sitting on. It is on the floor and I start my panic. Where is Allie and WHERE is the muffin. I find Allie under the dining room table and I call her. She comes out with this look on her face. She KNEW she had done something wrong. The muffin is nowhere to be found not even a crumb. SHE HAS EATEN A CHOCOLATE MUFFIN!! It is 5:45 at this time so I call the vet in a panic. Thankfully someone answers. I tell the receptionist what happened and she says "Take her to the emergency clinic now the chocolate can be fatal" then she says hang on a minute let me talk with someone. Apparently, my vet was still there and he did some calculations on the suspected amount of chocolate she ate and he said he thought Allie would be o.k. just to watch her and see what happens. If she starts throwing up or has runny poo to take her to the emergency vet. I am very happy and relieved to say she never had any problems and everything came out well (no pun intended).

Thank God everything turned out well.... been there done that! UGH! These doodles can make you sick with worry!

Oh goodness, I am so happy she's okay!!! And also happy you didn't have to take a trip to the emergency vet. The muffins made Allie go crazy...

Leigh, I am so glad all is well. Our first dog, Hershey, never counter surfed either until one Christmas Eve we came home to find she had eaten a box of Godiva Chocolates. I had never had Godiva chocolate and thought about that box of candy all through church (I know, I know). We opened the door and she had carefully unwrapped it and eaten every piece. This was a long time ago and I did not even know how bad chocolate was for a dog. I mainly was trying to keep myself from killing her :) Anyway, luckily she was fine, so I guess, in this case ignorance was bliss.
I guess Allie just realized what most of us know already...always go for the chocolate. Glad she is fine.

I'm so glad everything turned out okay. My guys have not counter surfer YET, but this is a great reminder that just because they haven't done it yet, they still have to be watched.

I had the same encounter with my golden she was very large so it was very easy for her to just lay her had on the counter and retreive anything she wanted,but she was a good girl and never did,until there were choc.chip cookies in sight.Al most half the batch!!!!! Called the vet right away and he did the same thing,calculated the and her weight and she was ok.No reaction at all.

Many many years ago we had a toy poodle and we were making Buckeyes .... for those not familiar it is a peanut butter ball dipped in Chocolate to look like a Buckeye! Anyway, we turned our backs and the little poodle got up on the table and ate the remaining chocolate in the bowl. We didn't even know it could have hurt her until a month or two later at the vet we mentioned it and that was the first time we learned that Chocolate can be deadly to dogs! We got very lucky!

Ned - yes, little Ned counter-surfed my left-over part of a chocolate iced pastry recently. I was quite disappointed in him! He had no adverse effects - a little tummy ache as a deterrent might have been okay though!

Gracie's encounter was at 6 months with the Thanksgiving turkey and one other time with an avocado! After that it was sponges, dish brushes, cell phones and remotes. At 6 months she was already a big girl and it was very easy for her to do. But only when we were not at home. By then she was no longer crated but contained to the kitchen...duh...those are all the items in the kitchen!!!!
