Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We have had Hudson home for about a month now and he needed a few things done. I noticed the fur between his paw pads was getting really long, also the bum fur was.. well.. getting in the way of doing his business! I have a friend (not a good friend, more of an aquaintance) who owns a grooming business, and since Hudson is not done his shots I thought I would get her to come to my home and do some grooming for me. Right away she told me that she couldn't just shave the problem areas (stomach/bum/paws) and leave the rest, as it would look terrible. I assumed this meant she would blend them into his coat? She told me to trust her and that he would look great. She asked that I leave the room (it was making Hudson more nervous with me there) so I did... and when I came back in my fluffy adorable labradoodle had been completely SHAVED! He does not look like the same dog. I held it together, paid her, and when she left I couldn't help but cry! I am not one for confrontation so when she asked if I liked the length I just said 'its ok..'. Hubby is not impressed that I paid $80 for something I am completely unhappy with. I had asked her if she had groomed labradoodles before, I just don't understand why she would want to shave him down so short?! I will try to add a pic when I get one. I have seen many pics of dogs going through coat change who get matted and need to be shaved, thats what he looks like. Even his head poof is gone. Going to go cry now....

Oh Hudson!! I had the same thing happen to me!! I was shaved NAKED!! My mom cried and my DD was in shock!! At first they thought the groomer had given them the wrong DOG!! But I KNEW them!! HEE HEE!!! They tried to put my sweater on me to keep me warm (it was in early March) but it was GIGANTIC on me without any hair!! It just hung!! But you know, it didn't bother me nearly as much as it did them!! I was still happy and jumping around and felt so light!! Tell your momma that you are still the same little doodle on the inside and that your hair will be back just the same again really soon!! Your friend, Tara

You won't believe how fast Hudson's hair will grow back! I promise you that by the holidays he'll look like a little fluff ball once more! We've ALL had our bad experiences with groomers. As F suggested below you might want to take the time to learn how to groom Hudson yourself. It's not every one's cup of tea but with a bit of practice it's actually fun! It's still trial and error with Gaston-Cramer and I but he's very patient (and forgiving) and I think we're getting the hang of it! There's a grooming group here you might enjoy joining. If nothing else than to give pointers to your next groomer.
I'm certain Hudson is still absolutely adorable!!!!!!!!

Oh you can't imagine how many of us have experienced the same thing, but it does grow back quickly, and he'll be a fluffy Doodle again. Have you tried checking with other Doodle owners in your area to see where they go for grooming? You might just do a search under the Members tab, send "friend requests" to other local Members, and ask them who they would recommend.

She shaved him down because she didn't want to take the time to properly cut his hair; it's much easier & faster to just go zoom with the clippers than to work out any matts, comb through the hair, get it cut evenly all over, blend in, etc. Laziness and possibly a lack of skill.
But it will grow back. While it does, start looking for a good groomer who is experienced with doodles and other non-shedding breeds in your area. If you can find one who does scissor cuts on poodles, that's probably your best bet...that means it's a groomer who is used to taking time and doesn't take shortcuts...no pun intended. :)

I would cry too! Definately do the research next time, she should have been able to blend in, I had that done at the groomers several times for Rosey. And Bandit just got his privates feet and face trimmed several times before it got warm. When he got his summer cut I though he looked like a rabbit he was sooo skinny. Good news is that it will grow back, maybe call groomers and make sure they have experience with doodles. {{Hugs}}

It will grow back SOOOOOOO fast!! At Bodi's last cut they had an OOPS and shaved him bald in a 3 inch circle - it two weeks you could not see the spot!

they did the same thing to my baby when he was about 10 1/2 months old......I had no idea they were going to shave him to the skin, and I too cried the whole way home! I had to stop the car a few times to avoid having an accident. Poor little guy looked like he was NUDE.....and seemed so embarrassed the next day when we walked outside and he saw his friends. But the good news is that the coat grew in nicer than ever, and in just a matter of weeks he looked gorgeous again. At his first birthday party, he looked closely groomed, but handsome. I'll see if I can dig up a pic of the first birthday party to show you.

Candy, I am so sorry that she shaved him. Fortunately his coat will grow back. I am sure he is still a cutie. I wonder if she ever heard of a sanitary cut? Most of the groomers in my area offer it.

It really does grow fast and you should perhaps just do it yourself next time. I think it's the safest solution.
