Car Accident Today But We Are Okay

I just wanted to share today that I have been neglectful on putting Bentley's seatbelt on since he hated it. Bentley's Dad didn't like the way he pulled himself to get away from it so we just didn't use it. Today I was going to take Bentley to Goldengardens dog park and then to lunch at a restaurant that lets you take your dog. I don't know why just decided he needed to get over it and learn to just wear it. Today was the day so I bucked him in and praised him for sitting nicely. We passed two accidents on the freeway. I got off the freeway and we were rear ended really hard!! A man was looking at his daughter in the backseat and boom!! It happened so fast and I had my seat belt on but still hit the steering wheel. I could see Bentley fly but only as far as the seatbelt let him. We were hit so hard he would have flown thru the windshield. We are okay but I had to go home and hug him and cry. We didn't go to the park and I am sore already. I was really shaken up by this and wanted to share. I can't imagine if I would have lost Bentley since I love him so much!! That little voice or gut feeling is always right.

Thank you for this reminder to always, ALWAYS put Toby's harness/seatbelt on, no matter how short of a distance we are traveling!!!! I'm so relieved to hear that you were both ok. Good thing you trusted your gut/inner voice!

Oh my goodness. I am so glad you are BOTH okay. I always use the harness seatbelt for Peri, but need to buy one for DH's car so that we always have one for her. Doing that now...

Just told my DH your story and we both think that tethering is not the best way to secure Gracie. It is attached to her collar and if an accident happened it could hurt her neck or worse. Is Bentley able to lay down with his harness on? What kind do you have? I guess I need to research harnesses...fast too!

I am so glad you posted this. I too have been lax with my leashing up Gracie Doodle in the back seat. I have the short leash that clips on her collar and buckles into the middle seat belt. This way she can lay down or sit up. My husband is really bad about tethering her and it started wearing off on me. I am going to go buckle it back into the backseat seat belt right now!!!!!! Thanks!!!!

Oh My GOSH! Thank goodness you listened to that voice! I'm so glad you are both only sore. You are soooo right about using the seatbelt. Yo know I am SURE none of us would ever think twice about not putting our children in a seatbelt... so why do we allow our dogs to be loose? (I'm guilty of it too)... Whew!!!

I am so glad that u guys are ok, and yes an accident can happen in a neo second, from out of nowhere. so glad that u listened to that inner voice today. Ollie didn't like his either, but he did get used to it and now he wears it whenever he is in the car. So sorry that you are getting sore, a good bath in some nice warm water and epsom salt will help that. Or if u have a jacuzzi tub, that will help too...Of course some aspirin or advil or Motrin would help some too...

Thank you so much for sharing this. I am sooo glad you guys are ok! I have a seatbelt for my GD, and will need to get an additional one for our newly adopted LD. I have been a slacker with it since i have one of those "hammocks" that stretches across the backseat to protect the leather on the backseat. I was rear-ended last week, after returning to work from letting the dogs out during lunch. Literally one of my first thoughts was "thank god, i don't have the dogs with me". Thanks for bringing this to the attention of so many. Hope that you feel better soon! So glad that you are both ok!!!!
