I noticed in this weeks slide show that many doodles do not appear to be harnessed / restrained in the car. I'm guilty of this too and I have a restraint that I often do not use. Wondering if anyone experienced any misfortunes by not having their doodle restrained? Maybe this would be a good eye opener.

We have harnesses and seatbelt straps for Lucy and Sophie and I always buckle them in. Yes, it is a pain, especially if I'm only going on a short trip. However, I do it always just so I'm in the habit of doing it. Ours ride on the back seat of the van. This generated a conversation with a lady in a parking lot one day who saw me buckeling them in and she told me about her daughter who just lost their dog because they were in an accident in a mini van and their dog was in a crate, but the crate wasn't secured. Somehow in the rollover, the dog came out of the crate and was ejected and killed. I've also read a story (actually on here I believe) about an accident where someone ended going up on the curb and hitting something underneath the car that came through the floor. If I remember right the person said their dog usually rides on the floor and it was just a fluke that it was on the other side (or something of that nature). I don't remember exactly. But that got me to making Sophie stay on the seat because she prefers the floor. My young niece also got broadsided in a Walmart parking lot by a guy going way to fast cutting across the parking lot. She had her little dog with her and it was not buckled in. Fortunately it wasn't hurt, but it did get tossed around pretty good. That could have been very tragic for my niece because she has a platelet disorder, and should have gone immediately by ambulance to the hospital in case she had any internal bleeding ..... however, because she had her dog, she wouldn't let them take her because they wouldn't let her take the dog. She waited until her mom and dad arrived and they rushed her to the hospital. Apparently the dog would have been sent to the animal shelter if she had been taken to the hospital.

I've heard of too many car accidents caused by loose dogs in the car.....really good dogs who happen to see a deer or something. So, Nugget always has her harness on in the car....for our safety and hers! (I think a lot of the dogs in the adorable doodle slide show were in cars that were not moving. Nugget loves to hang out in the car in the garage. Then, she is not harnessed, of course.)

I noticed the same thing....we restrain Comiskey and Beemer....we have a large 7 seat SUV and they still want to sit in the front seat....so we decided for safety sake they should be in their own seats...they wear a harness with a seat belt attachment.....but no matter which doodle sits on what side...they want to switch!

I am glad you posted this. We do not (as of now) have a seat belt for Timbow, but I would really like to get one. What kind do you have?
