Okay – will someone out there pawease help me? Can you tell me where to buy costumes for large dogs?
The Boys and I called ourselves being “proactive” in preparation for their “howl-o-ween” pawty atOlde Towne Pet Resort. Twice a year, their furrendly furrends at OTPR co-host a doodle romp with Harley & Leo. This is our last one for 2013 and we have a theme…
Since the theme concept was “our” idea, I drove around to all the local pet stores looking for thepawfect costumes. Initially I had a couple of really creative ideas, but after the fourth store on the third day – I didn’t care if they were dressed like candy bars (“Doodle Joy” and “Snickerdoodles”).
I was tired, and we kept coming up with “bupkis.”
At every store, I made it a point to tell the cashier I was shopping for two large dogs and if it didn’t work out – I would return the items bright and early the following day. I assured them the tags would still be on, and I’d have my receipt. No one seemed fazed.
Apparently I wasn’t the only pet parent out there doing the exact same thing. Practically every store I purchased from, someone was in line either before or after me returning a pet costume!
When I thought we had enough to choose from, we sat on the floor and we surveyed our stash…
I set up the camera while my assistant checked my lighting…
WARNING
What you are about to see could be harmful to your health. You could experience such uncontrollable laughter it might induce stomach cramps. Nothing that I grabbed in XL, XXL or even XXXL came close to fitting either one of them.
I thought Harley would make a cute penguin (until I put it on him)…
Then I thought “ok” maybe Harley could be the “Chick-fil-A” cow…
The “doodle-devil” had potential, it was cute…
But let’s face it, he wasn’t going to carry the pitchfork…
And then after the bunny rabbit, well, I just had to take a break…
This was an XXL – why doesn’t it fit?…
The tinkerbell wings were the only thing that fit, but even “I” won’t let Harley go out looking like that…
Leo as a “witch-a-doodle” was just plain frightening, plus he couldn’t see…
The store clerk told me this elephant costume would fit any dog Leo’s size – NOT…
He said the same thing about this “doodle-devil” outfit too…
True to my word, they ALL went back to the store the very next day. Later that week I went into their box of goodies (blankets, leashes, rain gear and such) and decided to “repeat” 2012.
The costumes fit, they’re cute, and most importantly - my Boys can walk into the pawty heads high and maintain their dignity…
After all, Dr. Seuss is a classic – so we’re gonna do it again…
Thanks for reading, got to go in the attic now and find my Dr. Seuss hat…

Joanna, the bunny suit was an absolute riot. I fell to my knees laughing. Harley didn't care, he loved the way it felt. I guess to him it was like a cocoon - it was so darn tight!
I'm with you April, someone suggested I paint the Boys, but with my luck residue from the paint would remain on their white coats and I would never forgive myself. I'm going to repeat Dr. Seuss this year and then make something up myself next year. How was your event? Did Luna dress up?
Thank you Lynda. I got the concept from a friend of mine who dressed her girls in those shirts for Halloween. And when I realized we had a Cat in the Hat "hat" still in the house from our kids, it all came together. Thanks for reading, have a doodle*licious day
To be perfectly honest, Harley would have loved to wear the Bunny suit all afternoon. That thing was so soft, he really did fall asleep with it on while I took photos of Leo. But my husband would have died if I kept it. Oh well...
Awhhhh Sue, send us a picture of your little ladybug - we want to see. Harley gave me such a pathetic look when I put the tinkerbell wings on him, I just didn't have the heart. Sounds like a homemade version on something is going to be the best bet for next year for us.
They are very good sports trying on the costumes! I was routing for the bunny, love it. Thing 1 and Thing 2 are adorable though and looks very comfy for the doodles! Have fun!
Like the THING 1 AND THING 2 costumes. My nephew's twins wore those, but not for Halloween.
Target has a good selection of costumes for dogs. Groucho Too is a skunk this year and with just a few minor adjustments he looks perfect. Harpo kept pulling his skunk tail and he doesn't like costumes but will wear a t-shirt with no problem at all, so he is a cat. I just turn the t-shirt around and the cat is on his back. It is a big cat with green sunglasses. So Harpo is a cat and Groucho Too is a skunk. Quick and cheap costumes.
I gave up on finding a costume for Luna - I was trying them on in the store... I ended up with a pumpkin sweater and a jingle collar. We were at halloween event for dogs yesterday - a lot of the larger dogs were either spray painted (saw a standard poodle painted green and pink) or had homemade costumes. Some of them were VERY creative. I can't imagine painting my Luna though = (
