Now “Milo” is not another doodle, Milo isn’t even a pet. Milo happens to be the name of a doggie treat my boys absolutely adore.

Milo’s Kitchen (home style dog treats) so far – has been one of the few treats to actually pass ALL the “treat tests” in our home. Here’s what I’m up against:

  • Harley has the most sensitive stomach known to man, real rich treats seem to send him straight to the yard (if you know what I mean).
  • If a treat carries a particular aroma (I’m sure it’s to entice the dogs appetite and certainly not mine), it turns out to be twelve times worse on Leo’s breath  – Ugh!
  • If that “aroma” is the slightest bit “pungent”, my DH (Doodle Husband) and DD (Doodle Daughter) will fuss to touch them and complain until they are all gone – I’m not kidding!

So when I stumbled upon Milo’s treats, everyone was thrilled, and so far – so good:

  • No upset stomachs for Harley. We’ve only purchased the chicken meatballs and they are working fine.
  • Leo’s breath doesn’t knock me down when I’m sitting on the floor and we’re “eyeball to eyeball!”
  • Both Lee & Tiffany have no aversions to getting  and giving the treats – and that in itself says a lot!

Now that you know my challenges, if you know of other treats out there that fit the same MO, hit me back and share the good news please….

CHAIR UPDATE -  I am pleased as punch to announce that there is “no more drama” during the week when we retire upstairs for a little telelvision viewing (and the winner of the four year chair war is). The little bed, turned recliner for Harly is just perfect and we no longer sprint to the room playing musical chairs (there was never any music…):

Don’t worry about Leo – he has a ball stretching out over both beds in the outer area of the room. Life is Good!

Luckily here in Ireland they don't have the Chinese stuff.  I buy German dehydrated turkey hearts  ( I had to call the company though to make sure they were of EU origin)  otherwise I make my own version of the Liver Drops but I double bake them and make them teeny tiny.

Jarka, there's a whole discussion in TFG on making your own dehydrator treats.

Monty loves Joanne's Liver Drops. They stink while cooking, but anything for my dood. I might need to but a dehydrator and try the chicken jerky now that I've got two boys.

In the FG, you will also learn how to read labels on dog food products. The Milo's Meatballs you are feeding contain BHA, right there on the label. Here is what The Dog Food Project says about BHA:

Butylated Hydroxysanisole - a white, waxy phenolic antioxidant, C11H16O2, used to preserve      fats and oils, especially in foods.

Banned from human use in many countries but still permitted in the US. Possible human  carcinogen, apparently carcinogenic in animal experiments. The oxidative characteristics  and/or metabolites of BHA and BHT may contribute to carcinogenicity or tumorigenicity.

Karen, my two have the Pure Bites liver and adore it. They get it after their Evening Primrose Oil.

Cathy, we have a great big group here on Doodle Kisses with which I'm pretty sure all active members are familiar, called The Food group. More than 900 members, and hundreds, maybe thousands of discussions on brands (Del Monte, which owns Milo's Kitchen, would not be a good choice), foods, treats, etc. Hundreds of safe treat recommendations. There are lots and lots of treats which are safe and use only American ingredients; however, you won't find them in the grocery store. Why not join us in the FG and participate in our DK family?

Jackdoodle has IBD and cannot have treats other than Pure Bites, which are plain freeze-dried chicken, or plain pieces of chicken.

Hi Cathy, no trick to preparation on the chicken jerky. I buy inexpensive frozen chicken breast and slice while still slightly solid, lay them on the dehydrator (inexpensive buy on-line, believe it was less than $50) and run it all day while I am at work....when I get home we have jerky. These are the ONLY treats Daisy eats because of her sensitive tummy.

I don't make treats at the moment. All the ones I mentioned are good and safe to the best of my knowledge.

Zuke's mini treats might be a good idea while you are preparing to do homemade. Since they are small and I think high quality you might have better luck on the GI end. The smell is stronger (I think the big commercial treats are a lot stinkier) but I keep them sealed and in another container to keep them fresh. Finn goes ballistic over the salmon treats. He will do all his tricks in a row when he hears the bag come out and he will come when called no matter what if I am holding them so,we save them for training only!

Hi Doodle Family!

First let me say "thanks so much for the education!" I truly appreciate my doodle family. I knew about chicken jerky coming from China, but not the meatballs. I feel so blessed to gain this information from you all - thank you so much..

Allyson, Peri & Taquito - I will heed your warnings, I am so sorry to hear about your chicuahua. Thanks for keeping me straight!

Lisa and Daisy - Haven't tried Jerky yet, like  I said, Harley's got such a sensitive stomach. What's great about this subject is so many people are encouraging me to try homemade jerky, so I will have to get online, and try some for myself - any good tips on preparation secrets? I'm gonna trust you on the gas theory. LOL

Karen & Jackdoodle - I Trust me - even though I thought the meatballs were safe, thanks to you and other doodle families, I will have to look for other alternatives. Again, if I am receiving any compensation for advertising, I will make sure I disclose that up front - that's a promise! I am not receiving anything from Milo's Kitchen, I merely wanted to share what seemed to work with my sensitive stomach doodle (both going in and coming out). I am grateful for the information you've shared. Might I ask what are you giving Jackdoodle? Seems like I will have to learn how to make my own homemade treats. Great hearing from you.

Joanne & Spud - Now liver I haven't tried in any shape or form. I will browse through the cookbook and let you know how they like them.

Adrianne Matzkin - Hi Adrianne, I couldn't agree with you more, this is the perfect place to not only share the good and the bad, but to learn from it as well! Because of this blog post, I am realizing that perhaps homemade treats are the safest route to take for the boys. i am no longer working so I definitely have the time - getting a little excited about trying a few recipes out! Thanks again so much for taking the time to write.

F. Calla & Luca - I too use Mother Hubbard biscuits from time to time. That's a hit with Leo. Take care
