I dont remember where or what started the conversation a few weeks ago when we got into fire safety but.. We were testing our smoke alarms and every time they went off I took Monty outside because it hurt my ears.  I decided that day that training him to leave the home when the smoke alarm went off would be a good thing.  We did practice that a few times that day a month or so ago.  Sunday our smoke alarm went off because of our wall oven that spews the heat into the hallway where the alarm is.  Guess what? Monty ran to the front door very excited and wanted to go out!  I couldn't believe it.  So to be consistent I put his leash on and outside we went until the noise stopped.  I'm so impressed that he gets  the fact to leave the house when the noise starts!  We are proud.  I hope that we never need this behaviour, but it sure makes me feel better that he might not hide in the house if a fire should occur.

How great!  I am going to try to train Peri to do this when we buy a house (in condo now).

WTG Monty!  At this time, Rua is confined to her crate, so if a fire breaks out and we aren't home, they could find here (I am waiting for my new ASPCA stickers - I'll note WHERE she is).  Unfortunately, my DLH cat, PuffDog, would run and hide.

well first of all i had DH doing the deed,. but never the less, put a flame up close with a lighter, leash and leave.

in all seriousness, Monty wanted to leave the home upon hearing the noise, Could be problem cause that smoke alarm needs replaced, much too sensitive to realitie. We plan to replace it with a better brand.

That is so cool! What an amazing idea. And so simple too.

I wonder if there are smoke detector trainers out there. It would be simplier than using a ladder to press the button, climbing down, getting the dog, getting the leash and making your way outside.

I know I hear ya.  Actually R&B are home a couple times a week by themselves.  I just hope we would never have to deal with it.

i worry a lot about us not being here. :(  I wish to have ADT that has fire alarm activation..........but then what are the odds of that vs the cost?  I dunno.  At this point i'm glad that Monty is realizing that the alarm means to leave the area, not to hide.  As with anything we cant cover or protect all stuff, but something is better than hiding right?  I mean what are the odds they are stuck home alone?  and even if............gawd forbid, they might be looking to get out instead of hiding?

That is great!!  My worry is thou them getting out if we weren't home, do you have a doggie door or something?  I have been thinking about putting one in.
