Fudge turns three on Christmas Day and I can’t believe how quickly the time flew by since we got our first Doodle!! We can’t imagine our life without our sweet Fudge in it and we are so lucky she found our way to our home. All it took was one picture on the Internet and I knew that chocolate girl was headed our way.
My youngest daughter and I drove 600 miles to Indiana to pick her up and turned around and drove 600 miles home. I often think about her breeder telling us she was the calmest dog in the litter and was content to sit and watch life go by. We think we got the wrong dog or the other puppies in the litter were all a bunch of Marley’s. Fudge is wonderfully calm in the house, loves her naptime, rarely barks, likes to sleep in, but take her out in the yard and watch out cars driving by, squirrels, rabbits (remember Stewpid) or anything else that moves quickly. She is also smart as a whip and sometimes I swear she is a person the way she thinks something out and acts.
Here are just two reasons I am pretty sure Fudge is a genius. Recently, Vern was chewing a bone in the living room that Fudge wanted. She will take a ball out of Vern’s mouth, but the two of them are very respectful of each other when they have bones. Vern will often sit and pout when Fudge has a bone that he wants and she likes to act like the teasing, older sister and walk by him just to make sure he knows she still has what he wants. Fudge, on the other hand, uses her smarts when Vern has a bone that she wants. The other day, he was in the living room with a bone and she walked by, went into the foyer, and gave a couple of barks at absolutely nothing and when Vern took the bait and ran in to see what the commotion was about, she was already in the living room chewing his bone. Sometimes, I think she just likes outsmarting Vern more than the actual bone. I had two daughters too and my oldest reminds me of Fudge. Both are very smart and like to tease their younger sibling. Of course, when I told my oldest this story about Fudge and the bone and how it reminded me of her and her sister, all she said was, “So, does that make Hayley Vern?” and then she smiled. I rest my case.
Here is another reason I think Fudge is a genius. My daughter and son-in-law spend every Christmas at our house and they always bring their dog, Bonzai. This year they flew in from Oregon and had to leave Bonzai and Jazz home, but I swear Fudge remembers that Bonzai usually comes too. It has been one year since she has seen Bonzai, but she laid at their closed bedroom door most of the night. She never does this unless Bonzai is in that room. I have no idea if she could remember something from one year ago, but until someone gives me scientific evidence otherwise, that is my story and I am sticking to it.
My life is full with my two wonderful dogs and it all started with my chocolate Fudgers. Somehow, I have the perfect combination of two, although they are by no means, perfect. Without Fudge, I would not have found DoodleKisses and made so many wonderful friends and learned so much. Happy Birthday, Fudge! You are our sweet girl!!!
