Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I knew my Boys were fond of riding. They are (what one would call) my “road dogs” (pun intended)…
The car is always packed and ready for any unscheduled, impromptu excursions. And they are always up for a road trip!
Whether it’s down the street, or across State lines – once that hatch pops open, they jump right on in…
It doesn’t matter what errands are on my list They could care less about “extra cargo”. Once I had plant’s in the back seat on the floor. Tall leaves bouncing all over the place.
Didn’t bother them at all. They sat back there like they were born and raised in the wilderness.“Jungle Doodles”…
Imagine the expression on my face when Harley went to visit a neighbor anipal, and “bummed a ride” back to the house…
However – - – Friday’s carnival act was pawlarious.
DH needed to zip right up the street and fill two coolers with ice. Wouldn’t have taken more than a few minutes – 30 at best. I wasn’t going, but as we talked, I helped carry one of the coolers down the driveway.
We placed the coolers in the car, and before I could get my foot from the curb to the lawn, “Frick and Frack were in the back”…
Once we stopped laughing, he told them to get out, but that was useless. They weren’t budging. I told them if they wanted to stay, they would have to sit down. Do you know these knuckle heads listened?
At that precise moment I realized I was part of one “Doodle Crazy Family.” So I grabbed my phone, locked the door, and joined them.
As we drove out of our subdivision, Harley laid parallel to Leo. But when we turned on the main road – he rose up …
Not traveling too fast, and the weather being “just right” Harley was literally “basking” in the sunlit breeze. Because they are practically the same color, I could not figure out how in the“doodle” he was sitting up so straight. All of a sudden he looked unusually tall. It took the distance of two full blocks and one traffic light before I was able to solve this mystery. But after studying them, I finally “got it!” He was using Leo as his pawrest…
I don’t know what seemed stranger:
You be the judge…
A quick, local trip to pick up a couple of bags of ice to some can seem so simple. In my world it’s apawventure! I guess I really do live in “Doodleville”…
Governed by these two…
Thanks fur reading, show the Boys to a co-worker this week, and “doodle dare” them not to smile…

What a fun road trip and the video is precious! Harley and Leo are very good passengers, maybe they could help Libby! She is not so good in the car! Thanks for sharing Cathy, your blog was so cute:)
They are so precious...even as young as our little pup is...she has from day one loved going for car rides...she is just amazing...went on two road trips this summer with her and she just slept the whole way...she just wants to be with us everywhere we go...and I love it just as much!
Hi Lori - it probably was for Harley. Not quite sure how Leo felt about it though. He's a team player for sure - he stayed down for Harley's sake the entire trip. I love that big dood. Thanks for reading...
Hi Lynda -
We are kindred spirits you and I. I wish you had a photo to share with the Home Depot trip. I would have loved to see that one! I do block off the connection from the back to the front seat for long trips, but you are absolutely correct, I need to find some type of safety block for our little runs around town. You be careful too. Here in VA people are getting in mad trouble leaving pets in cars at the grocery store, bank, etc.... Thanks for reading - have a great week.
Cute blog and yes, they can make it fit. My husband still laughs about the time he went to Home Depot to pick up construction supplies and had the back seat and back of the truck loaded with materials. The only space left was the front seat and two big doodles to share it. One could sit on the seat and the other in the foot rest area and they were very cooperative but kept changing positions. Hondo (105 pounds) and Groucho (85 pounds) would squeeze past each other to try to find a comfortable space.
And you got it! When we open the hatch, the boys jump in and it doesn't matter where we are going. Wherever it is, they want to be included. I take them with me to the grocery store and running little errands around town, but have to be very conscious about the heat in the car. I know all the shady areas in the parking area and make sure we are parked in the shade and pointed in the right direction to keep the back cool while I shop.
One comment for you. You might want to consider a barrier in your car to keep them from flying forward in case of an accident. Some people use seat belts for their dogs, but to me that is more trouble than it is worth. However, when we got our second big doodle (Hondo used to ride shotgun in my sports car), we bought a car for the dogs. It is a Ford Freestyle and has the perfect back area for the dogs and seating for four. My husband built a barrier from old dog crates and it blocks in the back area. Plenty of room for two and even three big dogs. We installed a truck bed liner that is easy to clean for our many trips to the beach and have a fleece-covered cushion made of memory foam for longer trips. Boy, they love to see that come out because they know we are going somewhere out of town. We make regular trips to Arizona and they love to go on LONG car rides. I wouldn't think of driving in L.A. traffic without the safety block in the back. You might want to consider this for safety for all of you on the road.
Looks like a great road trip!
