Yesterday evening, I walked outside to see what Lola was up to, and she was hunched over something at the back fence. Thinking it was poop,  I screamed "leave it!". Poop would have been GREAT compared to what I found. A little black bird, laying there, looking like it was hyperventilating. Absolutely horrified, I pointed at the back door of the house, and told Lola "MOVE". Head down, and tail between her legs, she slowly made it to the back door, where DH was coming out to tell me the great news that a new episode of Wipeout was on that night (love that show!). So I sent DH to investigate the severity of the poor bird's condition. Turns out the bird had a broken wing, but was able to hop through the fence to the safety of the green space behind us. DH insists Lola had nothing to do with this, but I'm not so sure....good thing we found out before she ate it or brought it to us as a "gift" or something. Whew!

I am also inclined to give Lola the benefit of the doubt and she was just "investigating" a bird in distress.  Of course I also chose to give Gavin the benefit of the doubt last weekend at the cottage when I discovered him hovering near a mallard duck nest that had a broken egg shell outside the nest :(

Comiskey's first summer, a baby robin fell from its nest and died....I watched this from the window...she picked up the robin ever so gently and put it on her favorite lounge chair...she continued to sit next to it for 2 hours (no convincing would make her leave that bird) until "Daddy" got home and only then would she leave her post.....

I'm willing to give Lola the benefit of the doubt and assume the bird broke it's wing somehow and since it was on the ground she was just checking it out. If she broke the wing I'm pretty sure she would have the bird in her mouth and bringing it to you already! haha At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I had actually already planned to take it in to the local wildlife rescue hospital...my sister volunteers there!!! But I wasn't going to chase it around while it hopped away. I can't find it today, so I'm hoping it found some friends and was able to find a safe place to go!

Awww poor birdie :-(
I hope it was okay- I'm such a nut, I would have scooped it up and rushed it to the wildlife vet, LOL.
But don't be mad at Lola, that's just her instinct...it's what dogs do.

Tara found a little bird on our sidewalk in the backyard a couple of days ago too! She just ran up to it, looked at it and then looked at DH with the "what do I do now?" look. LOL!
