Lady Belle – Adventures of a Blind Doodle - #6 – Wedding Bells
Belle here,
I thought I’d catch you up on events in my life in the last month. We settled into a nice routine. Mom, dad, and I get up in the morning. That means its “walk time.” So we go on a long walk. Almost always both mom and dad are with me. Lately dad’s been relaxing the leash to let me explore and sniff a bit. I know this route so well, I lead the way. Lately they’ve been asking me to stop and sit before we cross the road. I think I’m getting the hang of it.
When another dog or person approaches, dad runs his hand up my back and asks me to ”settle.” I guess this means stay calm. I’m getting better at this. Once the walk is over, I get my breakfast and take a long nap.
Last week the routine changed. They kept talking about getting ready for “THE WEDDING.” Apparently mom’s son and his lady were getting married on our property. I got to ride along with dad on some “mulch runs” in his pickup truck. On Thursday there was a commotion in the back yard. I could hear people pounding stakes into the ground. They were putting up a tent, and a dance floor, and porta-potties. Then some people showed up and stayed in the house. So there were lots of new smells and people petting me.
On Saturday morning they left me in the house to attend the service. Then dad came back and put me in my dog yard. Then people started showing up. There must have been a hundred! I heard all these people coming and going and I was stuck in my dog yard. Not fair!!
Then the music started. People were laughing and dancing, and they weren’t paying any attention to ME!! Finally dad came up and put me on my leash and took me down to the party. People kept saying how pretty and sweet I am. That felt pretty good. Then they started leaving except the people staying in the house. The next morning mom took the people to the airport and we were back to normal.
Monday night was a special night. Grandma came over. She’s 93 years old. I weigh almost as much as she does so dad said I had to be really careful not to knock her over with my enthusiasm. I think I did pretty well. I could tell she has had dogs in her past as she knew how to pet me and talk to me. That was a week ago.
Last week we got back to our normal routine. Walks in the morning. A long nap on the Coco rug. Dinner. Then goodnight. It is pretty nice here. I can ell they love me.
Next week is my first “Calm and Confident” lesson. I’m really looking forward to that. I’ll let you know how that goes. That’s all for now.
Belle
