Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

My heart breaks when I see posts from owners looking to rehome their dogs. I don't get a chance to log-on to Doodle Kisses often. And almost every single time I log-on, I see a post from someone looking to rehome their dog.

I really don't understand, so I usually refrain from commenting. We live busy lives--I'm a lawyer and my husband is a software developer. We have kids--young ones. Our puppy is wild--just stopped nipping the kids, but still jumps all over them! We live in a smallish house--a 1940s bungalow. We have allergies and asthma. I have a chronic illness. Never in a million years could I imagine giving up my Apollo. In fact, he gives us so much love that we're considering another one (umm, not right now). The only circumstances I really understand are if someone is too ill to take care of their pet or if  some financial circumstances prevent proper care of the pet. I try not to judge, so I don't comment.

I am just feeling so heartbroken that I had to rant. My rant is over now...

I share your feelings, Marcy.

Marcy - bless your heart - so happy to see that someone gets it!  Our world has gone to a ME first attitude.  I want a dog, I'm too busy for the dog, this isn't convenient for ME.  We need to educate people about the committment.  Apollo is a lucky dog!

between the re-homing of dogs and that article about the German Shepard left in the mountains, I am SO depressed today.  Not to mention all the horrible articles about animal abuse along side the article I was reading for the German Shepard (googled to see any updates and found other articles).  It makes me sad that there are people out there that can not see animals as a member of the family.  It is such a shame.

I'm so glad you blogged about this.  Given the nature of several discussions this week, when I read the latest, I really thought it was a test...how nice can we, as responders to this post, be?!?!  I just can't anymore....Like you all have said, I have an infant, my husband and I work full time, I'm in grad school, and I have 2 doodles.  And guess what, we still make time for all of it.  It gets hectic, but it has become a way of life that we love.  We still manage to walk in the park with our ENTIRE family, including our doods.   We still manage to go away on weekends with our dogs....Bottom line: if you want to make it work, then it's totally possible.

I know! I am getting teary all over again! @Barbara, I am w/ you...my family would help me. My sister recently had to move and she couldn't find an apartment in her price range that accepted pets. My mom, who lives 20 minutes from her and has a fenced-in yard, took her dog. My niece and nephew spend every weekend at my mom's house to spend time with their dog. In my view, once I bring a dog into my family...that's it, no different than when I brought my children home from the hospital! My heart goes out to these displaced dogs...

I totally agree with you Marcy..... "most" people, not "all" do not think ahead in3-4 or 5 yrs. that will the dog be too much to handle when they have kids?  I see it time and time again that kid #1, #2, #3 is on its way and we do not have the time for a dog..... didn't you think of that BEFORE you got the dog???   People think dogs/pets are disposable and can just get rid of them when they no longer server a purpose.  The way I see my 2 doodles are they are family members and are treated like humans and they belong to me and I would go to the ends of the earth for my dogs and are a part of me.  If I had financial/health issues my family/friends would do everything in their power to keep my dogs in the family because we are true animal lovers and believe our dogs are and belong with family.

I just have to hope and pray that a new and forever home will be found for this poor pup...
