Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
A few weeks ago, I bought a frisbee to play with Chewie.
After a bit of a rocky start, he's now getting the hang of it and is able to catch it in mid-air. It's really fun and we both have a great time!! I think that doodles are incredibly agile and athletic. My previous dog was a golden retriever and he was not able to catch a frisbee to save himself.
DH and I still needs to practice on our throws though 'coz we're still not able to consistently throw it in a straight line.
Everytime the frisbee goes off course or gets stuck on some bushes, Chewie gives us a dirty look as if to say "How do you expect me to get THAT?!" DH sometimes blame it on the wind or fact that it's a soft frisbee rather than a hard plastic one. (sign) Men!!
Here're some pictures of Chewie with the frisbee.
Warning: Playing frisbee can a bit dangerous. Chewie fell down a couple of times.

Great action shots! I think Tara might like this kind of frisbee. She doesn't like anything hard smashing into her face but this one looks soft. Chewie looks like he is having a ball!
@Angela - what a coincidence that Chewie and Wheeler share the same birthday (and year too)!! Awesome :)
What afun time. Glad you and Chewie are enjoying this activity.
What cute pictures-looks like it's a hit!
I brought Sasha all kinds of frisbees but the only one that seems to work the best is the soft kind. Don't even waste your money on the hard ones, if the miss catching it it hits them in the face :( The soft ones are a little expensive but totally indistructable. My doodles will play tug-of-war with it and it has never even been ripped. The only reason I replaced it is because it is a "outside" toy and got nasty from the mud, and was pretty dirty.
@Anne, Yes, the wind is a major factor in frisbee. Though Chewie doesn't seem to understand that and still gives us dirty looks when we can't throw straight. LOL.
@Angela, that's so funny..the frisbee is one of Chewie's "Special" toys too.
@Christine/Sherri, I think Chewie will eat his frisbee too given the opportunity. Which is why I only take it out during play times in the yard in the morning and afternoon.
@Thuy, Chewie's turning 1 yo next month. (Feb 19th)
@Janice, I saw the ORCA frisbee at the store too, but didn't get it 'cos I was afraid I will hit poor Chewie in the head with the heavy/indestructible frisbee. So I stuck to the soft one which also floats as the edges are made from soft tubes.
@Barbara - Yes, doodles are incredible catchers/retrievers. Even at really young age, Chewie's a natural fetcher too.
@Jane - Yes, he simply BEAMS with pride after a perfect catch
@Nicky/Riley - Frisbees are great. Get one and join the club :)
@Pat, Bonnie, GBK and Camilla - Thank you for your kind words :)
He looks so proud of himself holding that frisbee!
When Sasha first came home when she was a baby, the very next day she just knew how to play fetch. There was not training - nothing. I rolled the ball in the house, she ran and got it and brought it back to me = amazing for a 3 month old puppy. Then in the spring I brought her a frisbee and we practiced about a day, each time she got better and better at catching. Now she is an ol' pro at it, I brought her the soft kind and she just loves to play frisbee :) Every single time I am out in the back yard with her she runs and finds it and brings it to me to play. She catches it in mid-air and behind her and at times catches it with her paws.
Chewie sounds just like Sasha = they were born to be frisbee champs :) My labradoodle Oliver could care less about the frisbee - go figure !
I have been thinking about getting a frisbee for Riley and your great pictures of Chewie having such fun have just made my mind up though I think I will wait for the weather to get a bit better. It's non stop rain and cold here right now.
