Thanks for the emails :) I will keep looking. There is a breeder that my sister got hers from and he has retired dogs, so I am hoping to adopt from him. Fingers crossed!!!
Beautiful Doodle. He looks recently groomed too. WTH?
Good luck.

Hi Renee,
Welcome to DoodleKisses.
Do read the link Nancy, Ned, and Clancy provided. Make sure you are getting a well adjusted breeding dog.
A good way is to go to each breeders page. Typically, they do not publicly post their retired dogs. They occasionally ad them to their pages or have someone in mind.
I came in here to let you know many of us have had great concerns with the amount of Doodles in California shelters. For some reason,it seems out of hand :(
For this reason, another idea for you would be to search frequently for a wonderful dog who is nearly at death's door in your area. Here is one method:

OH MY--SO MANY WONDERFUL DOGS!
Renee, this is a must read article to help you find a reputable breeder: http://www.doodlekisses.com/notes/What_To_Look_for_In_a_Breeder
Yes, some breeders do find homes for their retired dogs and this might be a good way to get an adult dog. You want to be sure how those dogs breeding lives were spent because you might be getting a dog that not had the socialization or housebreaking you might think an adult dog has had. Sometimes a younger dog was held back for breeding purposes, but for various reasons, is not going to be used for breeding.
