Obedience School- competitions- AKC ??????

Today Fergie and I had our second basic obedience class. I've done good with her at home on my own but we want to take the Canine Good Citizen test in mid-May so I wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing and that she could behave in a room full of strange dogs. She's doing wonderfully. The instructor said she'll breeze right through that test. I like this obedience thing - I may go on with a lot more of it. What I need to know and I'll ask next week but when they have the obedience competitions - are most all of them for AKC registered breeds? We were going to do Agility classes and found that most of them near our home were all for AKC registered breeds - so, I wasn't going to go thru all the training if we couldn't compete. Yes, that does anger me but nothing I can do I guess. I still will do the obedience thing though even if we can't compete. I wonder what they teach you in the more advanced classes. Does anyone know? Have they every taken a lot of these classes? I'm curious.

Cathy, I just saw this post. I don't know if you would want to go to Kaukauna for agility classes but there is a facility here that I go to and really like. I'm not doing agility but Obedience and Dog Manners right now. They work with AMC and certify Therapy Dogs, which I'm interested in and also the CGC. Here is their website to see if you would be interested in checking it out.

There are plenty of opportunities for mixed breed dogs to compete in 'performance' events (Obedience, Agility, Rally, Flyball, etc.). The place to start is with the American Mixed Breed Obedience Registration (AMBOR for short). I believe it is free (or at least used to be) to register with them. Once you have done that, you can register and compete in events sponsored by UKC, NADAC, USDAA, CPE, DOCNA and others. I personally am familiar with UKC and NADAC and hold multiple titles with UKC. The AKC has even been discussing the possibility of opening up their performance events to mixed-breed dogs. I do not believe they are in much of a rush to make this happen but the 'old guard' who runs the AKC is getting a lot of bottom-up pressure from its members.

This topic is of interest to me, because I want to do obedience when I get my doodle. I am mostly interested in doing therapy work. But anyways, here is my two cents worth....

I put two Rotties through basic obedience. Had a great time doing it and the relationship you develop with your dog is unequalled. I rescued one of them and because of her issues of having been abused by a man, she would not "stand for exam." There came a time when I decided the process was my goal and not the title.
I stopped putting her through that stress as I thought my job was to protect her from those memories.

Here is a link that may give you more info!

The competitions that only allow AKC breeds, traditionally, are AKC competitions. Other venues do allow mixed breeds and depending on your local branch they also may allow mixed breeds registered a certain way. You can also ask "Lucy R" who is a member here...or look for just "Lucy" in case her username is different. Her dog is Ozzie.

Ozzy took the advanced class but I did not let him take the test...I had a dog that passed all of these tests and it is not easy. 1st thing is make sure your dog is very tired when you take the test...helps lots. Advances is most of the basics just you can not repeat yourself the must get it on 1st command. Stay is a big thing in advanced. No treats are allowed to get your dog to do the command..they have to know it without reward but you can praise them. Ozzy is a jumper as most doodles are, that is an automatic fail. When you walk and stop your dog must know to stop and sit at you side until you tell them to get up. Hope this helps. Agility should not be for AKC registered breeds..it is more of a fun thing just as flyball.
