The only good thing to come out of this contest is that the winner said all the money would be donated to charity. This is what the sponsor said, which addresses some of the issues people raised at the time.

Dr Papidies Wins One Million Dollars

While the competition is over it is our hope that we have afforded the majority of those who participated in the contest some joy while raising awareness of our sponsor’s brands and supporting the charities that will be the recipients of the prize money.

We have been both delighted and dismayed by the participants. We had advocates, detractors, cheaters and ethical activists. We’ve been accused of every manner of dishonesty while at the same time being praised for making it possible to bring communities together with causes that save dog’s lives.

We certainly did not anticipate the volume of responses and were admittedly not fully prepared for the consequences which produced delays and site crashes. Our server farm told us that we consumed more bandwidth in less time than any other online event they had ever managed. It was a 24×7 challenge to keep up with the half a billion votes that were cast and the flood of emails and blogs. Since this was such a new concept for a contest, we also did not anticipate all of the means and methods that would be employed to acquire votes or that the contestants and their supporters would be so morally divided about these issues… the digital world provided unexpected circumstances and consequences… both positive and negative.

To those of you that won, we congratulate you. To those of you who entered and voted, we thank you. To those who worked so hard, but did not win, we will be back with another event. We invite you to give us feedback – tell us what contest you would like to see us run in 2010, the ideas, rules, prizes… the works. Let’s see if we can do it better together next year.
