We convene a literacy program for the families we serve at the BKFJC; the literacy program is funded by the Brooke Jackman Foundation which was established to honor a young woman “Brooke Jackman” who perished during the terrorist attacks on 911. In any event, Paz (who is a registered "Pet Partner") accompanies me to work at the BKFJC, 1 -2 times per week to provide support for children who have witnessed domestic violence; he is a popular “guest star” during our family literacy program, and this past week we read a book called Oh, Crumps / Ay, Carumba; the book is a funny story about a farmer, his animals and so forth. In any event, I made a costumes for our staff to wear when they read the book to the families, and of course, Paz made his guest appearance dressed as a farmer. I’m attaching a picture of Paz “the farmer”; needless to say the moms and children absolutely roared when Paz strolled in replete with his customized farm hat. For the families we serve at the BKFJC who have lived with so much violence, the literacy program provides them with a unique opportunity to experience the joy of reading in a safe place, and Paz’s presence adds to that positive experience.
