Yesterday afternoon I was taking the dogs on their daily afternoon walk. It was HOT, I was tired and we were walking along the start of our greenway, which is adjacent to a very busy road. Two lanes, but still very busy. Peri's collar just came unsnapped - I had the leash and collar in my hand. 5 seconds felt like 5 minutes. My heart was about to leap out of my chest.

I couldn't think of what to do so I just said "Peri WAIT". (why not SIT??) She just stood there smiling at me, panting - I think she was thinking "I'm not going to run anywhere, mom...it's too darn hot!". Luckily Peri really knows the "wait" command. She generally halts wherever she is when I say this. She was 10 feet from running into a stream of traffic.

This made me want to remind Dkers of two things: 1) the importance of commands like WAIT and SIT and 2) check your doods collar (I usually do this!!!).

Happy Tuesday all!

Good girl Peri, I'm sure mom was proud and relieved! I think I have to keep practicing the wait. I get so excited! What type of collar was it? achilles

This just sent chills down my spine! Thank God Peri is such a good listener, and you thought so quickly Allyson!

After I read this last night I went out to the garage to see DH and calmly through out the "what ifs" and " maybe we shoulds"...
I saw his mind working and then looking over at those Carabeaners ( sp). Thanks again for the advice. How many times have I read about this on Dk, how many times does it have to break, and how many chances do we have to get it wrong :(
Loved the ideas and the visuals.

You may never take you doodle for a walk again lol!

BTW - just to throw another 'what if' into the mix, the camo collar that Gavin is wearing in the picture broke while he was teathered at the cottage and another dog came to visit next door. The plastic buckle was no match for his excitement. He now wears a flat nylon collar with a metal buckle :)

Sometimes I'm just too trusting or maybe just clueless. I always used leather collars and I had two break since I got Spud. Just snapped at the rivets. He thought he was clipped I guess. I made no big deal and I quietly panicked. Then this past winter one of the fosters goes off tramping happily down the street and into the woods as I held half a leather leash.

Obviously I have a false sense of security with prong collars I am using too! Thanks for the posting, the visuals and the advice.

Scary indeed.

Yes, and the whole bolt just pulled right out of the little metal stirrup part that's attached to the leash. Nothing cracked, nothing broken, the metal on the bolt just wore away enough for the bolt to pull right out with force. My son was actually able to force it back together, and to look at it, you'd never know there was anything wrong with it...which is the scary part!

Karen, was it a regular snap bolt on the leash?
