Yesterday afternoon I was taking the dogs on their daily afternoon walk. It was HOT, I was tired and we were walking along the start of our greenway, which is adjacent to a very busy road. Two lanes, but still very busy. Peri's collar just came unsnapped - I had the leash and collar in my hand. 5 seconds felt like 5 minutes. My heart was about to leap out of my chest.

I couldn't think of what to do so I just said "Peri WAIT". (why not SIT??) She just stood there smiling at me, panting - I think she was thinking "I'm not going to run anywhere, mom...it's too darn hot!". Luckily Peri really knows the "wait" command. She generally halts wherever she is when I say this. She was 10 feet from running into a stream of traffic.

This made me want to remind Dkers of two things: 1) the importance of commands like WAIT and SIT and 2) check your doods collar (I usually do this!!!).

Happy Tuesday all!

Thank heavens Peri knows the Wait command. I am glad things turned out ok!

I have never seen that - I need to ask in the store. It didn't break, it just wasn't fastened securely. Owner error :(

Thank goodness it all was okay! Here's what I do when any of my dogs are wearing a prong: I put on a choke chain as a back-up safety device. If the prong is working then the dog never gets any correction or use out of the choke chain (since it is looser than the prong)...but if the prong should break or come undone (let's say something makes the dog bolt or lunge and the prong breaks) the back up choke chain is there. I've never had the prong break, but I always put on the back up choke chain just in case. (The leash is then attached to both the running ring of the choke chain and the ring of the prong -- with the prong above the choke on the neck).

I use the prong collar when I walk her - it was loose......yuck.

Glad I worked out. How does her collar fasten? Some fasteners can really be a problem. The pros advise using a backup, almost choke like collar with certain fasteners to prevent disaster.

I'm so glad that Peri's such a good girl and that you've trained her so well! I felt like I wanted to throw up until your sweet dood was ok!

Glad everything turned out ok. I hate that moment of panic when all of the worst case scenarios run through your mind. That's great that she knows her commands, and that you thought to use them.
