Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Well, we had another race to the vet's this morning after a little bathroom issue. All while trying to race to school and to a doctor appointment for myself as well--all within an hour. Phoebe was supposed to go to puppy daycare for the afternoon as I was chaperoning a trip for my son but she ended up staying in the hospital ward instead! She had some impacted stool and then the vet tested and found an overgrowth of bacteria AGAIN! She is once again on antibiotics--I cannot believe she is on more than off. It is terrible and so sad. She also is wearing a cone and her little bottom was shaved some--poor little Phoebe.

I read back in some of your posts and I saw that you wrote that your vet at one point said Phoebe was too young for a UTI. I really don't understand that. A cranberry capsule opened and sprinkled over her food daily might help. A breeder of labs that i know said that some dogs with UTI problems get better after their first heat but of course most doodles are spayed before that. All in all I agree with some of the others who wrote that it might be time for a second opinion.

I am so sorry for both Phoebe and you. We brush Ned using the "hug method" My DH holds Ned while I brush and comb. Ned often snoozes for some of the time. My DH can hold him on his back so that I can reach his chest, tummy and armpits.

I took Phoebe to the groomer today and I spoke with the vet. It seems that she thinks Phoebe has a shortened/oddly shaped urethra which is causing some of these issues. She said that because it has been quite some time since Phoebe has had an infection and that she still has some more growing to do, the vet is hoping that the issue resolves itself. We are taking a watch and see attitude which is okay be me---for a little while longer. Of course, the alternative is surgery which I would really like to avoid! On a lighter note, we have been trying to keep up with the ever-increasing matting issue and our groomer told me hat she thinks we are doing a good job BUT she still needed to shave a little on Phoebe's chest ( fur covers it so only we know!) and some on her tummy. Phoebe is so difficult for us to groom despite the treats/two person approach/exciting toy song and dance we do, we cannot get to all the mats. Right now though, she is a glorious, great smelling puffball doodle that we adore!!!

Hey what about calling the U? If you want a 2nd opinion, that is where I would go.

Have you thought about taking her for a second opinion? I know they do a great job at AWC, but maybe they are missing something. This is a chronic problem...... I cannot believe what that little doll has been through! What about calling your breeder and asking her if any of her other pups have had a similar problem - maybe someone else has a solution to share with you. I feel soooo bad for all of you! Keep us posted!

write down the exact bacteria it is. Then you can ask your MD, your pharmacist. Will yogurt help? Maybe she is on the WRONG antibiotic. Most MDs give a Z-Pac for a sinus infection - after suffering for 3 months several years ago, I called an infusion pharmacy we work with. When I told them what antibiotic they gave me they told me that Z-PAc doesn't work on upper respiratory infections. So it kept coming back - once on the right one, low and behold it was gone! Let me know what the vet says.
