Shorty Chocolate Male Labradoodle needs a new family

Shorty was born Feb 2005 and I was contacted by his family that are suffering from economic issues and can no longer keep Shorty. He is a Chocolate Labradoodle approx 70 lbs and currently lives in Lansing, MI. I am trying to help find Shorty a new family in that area. Here are more specs on him.
My then 4 year old son named him Shorty Hair, which we shortened to just Shorty for practicality. He's very intelligent, knows several commands, is crate-trained, and just incredibly friendly. Our whole family loves him, but we've suffered some economic changes recently and absolutely cannot afford to care for him anymore. He's good with other dogs, kids, and even cats though he's a little rough in his curiosity of them. Our cat was smart enough to just avoid him. He knows: Sit, lay (though he's a little stubborn about this one sometimes and just sits), come, go (I swear he looks where you're pointing your finger and goes that way. We use this for him to get in the bath, too, and he does it), back up, down, crate (means "go in your crate"), and I can't think of anything else... We installed a doggie door on our laundry room door shortly after he came to live with us and he just goes out when he pleases. In this sense he is house trained, because he never has an accident in the house. I just imagine someone would have to teach him how to let you know he needed to go if you didn't have a doggie door. We've had less time for him than usual, especially in Nov/Dec at the end of my pregnancy and with the new baby here, then my husband burning his hand very badly. Because of this we missed the fact he has a yeast infection in his ears. He was rubbing his head on the floor and scratching so much the tips of his ears were bleeding :(. We're treating it with some drops from the vet and it's already improving. Otherwise he seems in perfect health. The last thing I can think to tell you is that he is intact. But everything I'd read said that un-neutered male labradoodles are temperamentally like the females or neutered dogs of that breed, and we've found that to be true. He's not the least bit aggressive or dominant at all. My husband is the alpha dog, and I'm second and he might imagine he's on par with the kids. Thank you,

if shorty is still available I like to come and meet him> We live on lk mi in the u p and do a lot (lot) of hiking/snow shoeing/boatinag and swimming. We really do hike a lot and would like to have a nice companion to go with us. We had a wonderful boxer (MAX) that developed cancer after 11 yrs and had to be put down. I filled out an application through IDOG but they responded that there were no dogs available in my area. I would be more than willing to drive to lansing. We have family in the fenton area and visit them often. I f you need any info about myself and my wife please email rberrry102050@yahoo.com Thanks

Yes, I am the breeder and this is my very first re-homing needed, so I did not know how to go about it and I really appreciate everyone's help. I agree neutering Shorty is a must. Thanks to all

Cam, I will send them the link to Doodle Train and all other links. I have not been able to get pictures of Shorty and Jessica is slow to reply to emails.

Michele,
Please give your father Jessica's email address if he is interested in Shorty, since he is near their location. I will even help cover the cost for neutering.

I didn't realize you were the breeder either.

Hi Sharon, I need to apologize. You are the breeder and are helping! I didn't realize that. Sorry! I was thinking that you're a friend that is helping to find him a home.

Good point April! If he is given away "for free" by the family, he MAY be used as a stud to support a mill or irresponsible money hungry breeder! Hopefully he will either be given to rescue OR neutered first!

Sharon,
Let me know if I can help. I'm not too far away and can help drive. (Doodle train) Have they contacted their breeder? Many times they are willing to place a pup that came from them. I would highly recommend that he be neutered before he gets a new home. If he's not, they run the risk of having him end up as a stud and not a pet. (Many are both, but there are also many mills out there.) There are some great programs that will do it for low cost, or I could ask my vet if he'd be willing to do it for significantly less. I hope this guy gets a wonderful new family! Good luck and again let me know if I can help.

If you're really interested in taking Shorty into your home Sharon, have you considered contacting the Doodle Train from the Doodle Rescue Resource Collective (DRRC)? The Doodle Train was set up to try & get rescue/surrendered doodles to their new homes by members of the DK group to drive them through their states like a doodle relay. Here's the link to the Doodle Train and/or you could contact Jacquie Yorke who's a member of DK & DRRC & she can give you more info.

Hope this helps! Cam.

Sharon,

My father lives in southwest Michigan and has been talking about getting a dog (he's absolutely in love with our doodle). If you don't get any interest in the Lansing area, my father may be your guy. He's a wonder with animals (used to race Standardbred horses for a living) and fantastic with dogs. And he needs a good buddy! Just let me know...

Cheers,
Michele
