Hello all.   It seems that I am always here when I have medical news to report about Cooper, but somehow I just feel it is important to share his story and if it helps convince others who might be on the fence about getting pet insurance to take that step, then it is worth it.

Cooper had surgery today.  He tore his ACL.  We are now calling him our million dollar dog.   He hasn't really reached that much in expenses, but it seems that way.  :-)   Poor dog has been through so much with his liver problem and now to have this surgery to go through.

On top of that, we asked for his teeth to be cleaned while he was under anesthesia.  He is at an increased risk for complications anytime he has medications, so it was a reasonable request.   They called and told us that his molar had a fracture and needed to be pulled.   Dang it!  Vet said the Antlers he loves probably caused it.   No more Antlers.  She has seen a lot of these types of teeth fractures since Antlers have become a popular chew.

Cooper has been resting comfortably since we picked him up this evening.   My husband has taken a couple of days off work to tend to him, since my mother is also having surgery tomorrow.

We are so grateful that we decided to invest in PetPlan Insurance when we got him as a puppy.  While we do have a deductible and a co-pay, it helps us tremendously when it comes to paying for his expenses and making decisions about his care.     Please, if you are on the fence about getting insurance for your pet, just do it.   You never know when your dog will end up with an injury like Cooper has now.   He was running in the back yard.   Happily playing.   Probably zigged when he should have zagged and next thing we knew, he was laying there and wouldn't get up, because he was in so much pain.

Thanks for reading and "listening".  :-)

Update, 10-30-2014

9 days later and Cooper is doing great!   He has been to  3 physical therapy sessions and is putting weight on his leg now.   The biggest problem is keeping him quiet and confined, so he doesn't hinder his progress.   Thank you everyone for the kind words.      And Mom.   She is back at her Rehabilitation Facility and hopefully on the road to recovery too.   We are facing a struggle there....

For Libby!  And anyone else who is curious.   Cooper is doing pretty good!   And today is his 5th Birthday!    He was supposed to finish his PT last week, but he is still limping a bit, so his Vet has added another 7 weekly treatments.    She said the joint feels solid, but he no doubt has some degenerative changes.   You are all so right.   Keeping him quiet and rested has been a challenge.   He loves to run and jump.  He jumps on the furniture.   He would rather be in "his" lazy boy than anywhere else.  :-)    It has been an adjustment.   For now, we are keeping him confined to the kitchen, except when he can be right next to us and always on a leash in those instances.   I am so grateful for this little love bug even though he has had his challenges.   He will get extra love and a special treat today for his 5th Birthday for sure!!      Mom is still in the rehab center right behind my home, making slow progress, but has started refusing to eat. :-(    Lots going on here, I had a health setback as well, but am improving.   Thank you all for the kind thoughts, suggestions and words.

Good to hear this news of Cooper's progress and recovery.  From experience keeping them quiet and rested is the biggest challenge. We used a very large crate in our living room for this purpose!
