I figured out what might be going through Porter's head everyday when he growls and woo woo's at the mail carrier.

The man approaches. Porter makes his menacing noises. The man leaves. Obvious success. Porter must tell the man this is our house for the guy to walk away. And if Porter did not bark, well, the man would surely come in and maybe even steal stuff from the fridge. The horror!

But Porter takes his work seriously and saves us from the mail carrier every day.

I do think the positive reinforcement of the evil intruders leaving helps keep the doodles, especially Calla in my case, ever vigilant. They saw woo, woo, and I say boo hoo. But sometimes it does feel protective and gives me warning that the bell is about to ring.

Peri doesn't woo woo when she is off our property. She wouldn't do that to protect me if we were out walking - even if a man came with a gun probably! Weird!

I'm torn between liking the woo woo when he is outside because I let the kids play in the backyard while I am all over the house, putting away laundry, etc--not looking out the windows. And not liking the backyard woo woo because the oil delivery person and garbage removal people do not need to hear it every time they show up to do their job. Eh, I think I'll take the woo wooing.
That said, Porter stops woo wooing as soon as he smells? that someone is a woman. So, a female burglar could do whatever she wants to my house.

@Allyson, yes, the woo woo, and the strange Chewbacca noises--I think someone working on Star Wars had a dog, maybe an early doodle :-)

Yes, the valuables :-) His main concerns in life are food, potential intruders, playing with the neighbors' dogs, and following me around. When I come back from the grocery store, he escorts me to and from the car while I carry the bags in. And my neighbor often finds him standing behind her in her kitchen while she cooks. (Her kids let in POrter or she leaves her backdoor open when it is warm, and our yards are fenced minus the middle divide.) We've both learned not to focus too much on him while cooking or he sits for a treat. Thank God his phase of barking at food he was interested in lasted only a few weeks.

I love that you say "woo woo". That is exactly the noise these doodles make, isn't it. WOO WOO when they are trying to protect us. So funny. Porter is adorable.

I really enjoyed this post and think that Porter is wonderful for protecting the fridge! He knows that's where you keep the "valuables"!

Yeah, I am pretty confident that at least half of my block is safe thanks to Porter, Brody and Maggie--three neighboring dogs who are really quite submissive and loving, but you wouldn't know it by how they sound.

I asked the Fed Ex one guy if he were a burglar would he break into my house ..... he said absolutely no way. You would think there were 2 pit bulls in here (ok, 3 right now).

Hmmm, that makes perfect Doodle sense.
