I live in Miami Fl and I would like to train my doodle to be a therapy dog. Has any one gone through this process or could recommend a training center?
Lee congrats on your new puppy (to be)! It's difficult for me to comment about crating because I used ours for a very short period of time. I did use a crate but was home with Bracy all day long. I would suggest if you can that a day or two at home with the pup to 'settle her in' might be good. I do remember the first day home bringing Brady in the house and the first thing he did was 'pee on the dining room carpet' (we totally ignored this faux pas and just whisked him outside. I remember the pattern when he was new being outside - pee pee - big praise - like a big party - inside, play, eat, drink, sleep, OUTSIDE....... I believe I took him outside at least every hour for the first little while. Brady was slow to catch on to the 'outside' for pee, but was faster for poop.
The doggy bells (most pet stores have them) seemed to work very quickly and Brady uses them to let me know he needs out to this day. So, to answer your question, if you can't stay home with puppy for a few days could you have someone coming in to let the puppy out? I hope everything goes well for you .... get ready to fall in big doodle love!!!
Lee, our Libby goes to the groomer every three weeks, so we rarely bathe her here unless she decides to play in the mud:) We have used a baby shampoo a couple of times and she was fine, but I know there are many wonderful products out there for bathing. If you go to the forum and type in shampoo you will see discussions on this subject. Hope this helps!
Congrats! I have pups at my house born 2/7/13 so I know just what your pups is like right now!! This will be so much fun for you--if you want to see pics of similar pups (age-wise) go to my blog and see the posts I have about Lyric's latest litter--they go home on March 30th--getting close!
I think you have a good choice of puppy for allergies--all those waves on your pup's head means that they will have a fairly curly coat--fingers crossed that you will have an easy time with that--there are no guarantees with any dog, so it is a wait and see situation.
I see that you have "loving and gentle" in your description--well, puppies are puppies and they can also be crazy and wild!! :) They do have a lot of energy and sometimes they are even aggressive--it is a mixed breed after all and the generalizing about their qualities sets up false expectations--my advice is to learn as much as you can about training, expect to have some issues with your pup (in other words, do not set your standards too high based on what you have heard about the breed as that would be unfair to any pup) and train, train, train. They are very smart and will learn what to do quickly--if someone is there to show them.
Hi Lee and welcome to Doodle Kisses! This is a great site to learn and share about Doodles. The groups and discussions are amazing and fun too! I'm sure you are very excited about getting your baby Doodle, they are great dogs and so darn cute:)
Welcome Lee! Your puppy is so precious! Does she have a name yet? Look around and join a few groups. There is a LOT you can learn here! A good group to start with is the "Puppy Madness" and also "the Food Group". You want to make sure to start out feeding the right kind of good food to your little one. Did you get her from a local breeder?
