I am a social worker who works from home and makes home visits, so am with my canine companions much of the time. I have a husband and 22 year old daughter who also have flexible schedules, which has been great for our pets. I LOVE animals, volunteer for German Shepherd Rescue of NE and all our animals are part of the family--they are furever. We currently have a 5 year old cockapoo and lost our beloved Cadence, our "big black dog" labradoodle in August to liver disease. She passed in her sleep and lived an additional year than we expected, which was a gift, as she still got to swim and play. We fostered a doodle for 6 months and have great references from friends and our Vets, as we have had canines with anxiety and my loving GSD lived till 13 as I became her back legs for the last year of her life. I could tell you more, but one thing for sure is, whatever love we bring into our home, they will live a happy, loving and full life. (we also took care of a doodle with dementia and learned about that so we could handle her behavioral concerns)
What Type of Doodle(s) do you have? What are their names? Tell us about your doodle(s) or any other pets you have!
Currently, we do not have any doodles:( Cadence was 13 and she passed to the rainbow bridge late August of 2018. We rescued her from being a puppy mill mom. She was taken in by a woman who did search and rescue with doodles and we went to Ohio to get her when she was 8 months old. She was the belle of the ball in our park until she became unpredictable with other dogs, so I did more training with her. She was a swimmer and always waited for me, no matter what time I got home and even if everyone in the house was a sleep. She slept with us and was able to welcome Pawley, our 5 year old cockapoo, who we rescued 2 years ago. We think that she kept Cadence alive longer as they became friends and always spent time together. Pawley had been abused by her original owner and another family adopted her and did a lot to calm her and learn commands. When the husband began working out of the home, she became extremely anxious and was prescribed Prozac.
When the family knew that even with that, she was suffering from anxiety due to their new work schedule, they put her up for adoption and we adopted her. She has not needed Prozac since she has lived with us, and it could be that we are home so much of the time and that she has also had a canine friend. She missed Cadence terribly and was happy when we fostered the 13 year old doodle, Jazzy:) So, now we are looking again for another canine family member for us humans and for Pawley.
Where did you get your doodle(s)?
Rescue
Why did you choose a doodle rather than another breed or mix?
We have always had dogs that were mixes and German Shepherds.
It was when our last GSD died, that I would look at pictures and on-line, thinking that I was ready to adopt again and my husband and daughter would hear me crying. It was during a Thanksgiving with family that we met my brother's labradoodle and I thought, maybe it is time for me to have a dog that would be the antithesis of a GSD. I had heard of Black dog rescue and someone told me about Black dogs not being adopted as readily as other dogs, and there was Cadence!!! She was listed as a rescue, I couldn't even see her eyes, but we knew she was the one if we were the lucky family to be chosen to provide her with her furever home. Now, I want to provide another doodle a home and feel that puppies are always going to be chosen but we want a younger or middle aged canine as they are usually harder to place.
What are Your Favorite Things to Do With Your Doodles?
I love taking them for walks and to the dog parks seeing them run around with the other dogs. I LOVE taking them swimming--Cadence and Jazzy loved swimming and I would go out with them, throw them balls and then they would retrieve them for hours. Love cuddling with them and brushing their hair. My husband and daughter loved running with Cadence especially when she was younger--we got her to be good on a leash and had a long one for running. I actually loved everything--watching them get excited when they got to play, see you come in the door, have things in their mouth and keeping their favorite toys. Jazzy and Cadence were both great travelers and loved the car rides.
