I ordered this bowl and it will be here on Monday. Hopefully my washing machine won't break down from washing so many mop-up towels before it arrives! When he's not moaning in ecstasy over his chewy things, Leo is one of many who participate in water bowl mania, jumping in his bowl and digging out all of the offensive water and dumping it on my hardwood floor. (And then I'm the one doing the growling!) Anyway, I found this bowl online....I think it was developed by the German Shepherd breeder who has the website. It looks like it is going to be just the ticket. There's a short video that explains how it works. I should wait until it gets here to post this so I can tell you how great it works (oh please please please!!) but I couldn't wait to tell someone. (Are any of the rest of you puppy owners having this issue? You know, like new parents where you even think your kid's bathroom habits are interesting?) Anyway, the bowl should be here on Monday. I have been saying since the day after Leo arrived that all I need in life is for someone to make a water bowl that he can't splash with....did I get my wish? I'll let you know for sure on Monday!!

It's TOUGH. Set it on the counter (make sure it's empty, or mostly empty first!) and wrestle with it. I've found it seems to come off best if the dish is flat on the counter. If you hold it sideways in the air it'll never come off. I have also been known to hold a rag/towel on the edge for a little extra traction. Good luck. It will come off but it's not easy.
Thanks.
Did you see my post about the stay dry bowl on the main forum? It looks better than this one.
It looks interesting. Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be widely available. I wonder if this one would open any easier than the rim comes of the one we have? I still need to get back to the store to check out the other option they carry....my daughter has been home sick with the flu all week so no shopping trips!
I will try to go look at it and will let you know about opening it.
I've discovered that if you only push one area to close the rim that it stays on but it is much easier to remove.
I bought a spill proof bowl at Petsmart that looks exactly like this one. My floor was still soaked so I returned it but it was only $5.99.
The Roadrunner bowl has a plastic insert that floats on the top which is what keeps them from spilling. The only water I've ever had on the floor is from Leo's feet....I'm guessing it wasn't the same. Is there a photo on the Petsmart website?
yeah, that is different. The other dish has a plastic piece that is the diameter of the entire bowl that actually floats on top of the water. That way only about a tablespoon or two of water is on top at any given time. When your dog laps up the water, their tongue pushes down on the plastic and it keeps the water flowing.
It's been awhile, so thought I'd give you guys an update. I switched to Leo's big towering water bowl last week. The good news is - he has not splashed or excavated it once even though he has had some MAJOR LEAGUE ZOOMIES!!!! I'm going to say that the Road Warrior splash proof bowl was a success because I think it must have trained him not to splash. If he rediscovers the joy of splashing, I just put the other bowl down again for awhile. Yay!
You know what is weird? Peri went through a stage of splashing that lasted about 2 weeks. When she was 12-14 weeks old. She has not done it since (knock on wood). Glad Leo is getting better. By the way, Peri is 7 months and had not had a zoomie in weeks. Last night she got a BIG one, throughout the whole house. I realize how I actually miss them. They are too cute!
