WELCOME TO THE FOOD GROUP - This group was started in an attempt to present well-researched and FACT-based information on the amazingly complicated and confusing issue of feeding our dogs. There are also many issues we would like to explore. We thought it would be helpful to put all of these questions, information, and feedback into one place here on DK where everyone can find it, contribute to it, ask questions, and learn together.
WE ASK THAT YOU NOT POST ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRODUCTS FOR WHICH YOU RECEIVE ANY TYPE OF COMMISSION OR COMPENSATION. THANK YOU.
IMPORTANT-PLEASE READ "FOOD GROUP GUIDELINES" BEFORE STARTING A NEW DISCUSSION.

I think this is an easy question. I think Maggie is tired of her food. She's been eating the same thing for a long time, and she's kind of blah on it. She's my most reluctant eater anyway. She's eating Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Boost Beef. She's…Continue

Yes, Stacy, the risk is to humans more than to dogs.
My issue with a company suing a government agency for the right to sell contaminated products. Those are our tax dollars that will be used to defend this frivolous suit.

Comment by Stacy on August 7, 2019 at 2:40pm

I don't feed this food, so I don't have a dog, literal or figurative, in this discussion. But isn't this a similar issue to companies that want to sell unpasteriuzed juices? I know there is a group of people that would like to take us back to the "olden days" where things were all natural and we didn't worry about things like vaccines and food safety. I think they lose track of how many people died from contaminated food, water, and viral illnesses that we have all but eliminated today. I think contamination still happens, but I don't want to buy anything from a company who has an acceptable level of contamination. No expert here, but I think the dogs tolerate salmonella better than humans. The dogs may be fine with the food, but there's a real risk of making the humans sick just from feeding it.

And I thank you for your information.  I will continue to study this issue from all points of reference.  Reading isn't the only avenue for accurate information and as a "lady from the older generation" I find the new "media" challenging but I still try to wade through it.  Taking everything I see and read with a grain of salt.

More impartial factual information on the Answer Foods lawsuit.
https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2019/07/pet-food-firm-sues-fda-wants...
I personally don't want to buy pet food from a company that argues that it should be okay to have "some" salmonella in its products, regardless of what the FDA does or doesn't do. To me, that's just common sense.

I don't own a smart phone and I don't watch youTube videos to get information on important issues. :)
I read.
I read reliable sources with no agenda and nothing to gain.
All of the information is in the link I posted below from their website; it's a legal document. They clearly state their position and their reasons in black and white, no explanations needed. :)
I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with their food from a safety standpoint, as far as I know. I'm saying I find their position to be unethical and self-serving, as well as costing the taxpayers (you and me)  lots of money to defend their unnecessary lawsuit, and I try not to patronize companies like that.
As the founder and moderator of this group, people rely on me to provide them with the information they need to make informed choices. What people choose to do with it is their business.

Answers Foods actual lawsuit is available on their website. It's under the "Complaint" heading on this link:
https://answersbeyondthebowl.com/2019/07/09/official-court-filings/
It's very long, and you have to wade through a lot of leaglese, but basically they are saying opposing the FDA's "zero tolerance" policy on salmonella contamination in food on the grounds that the FDA does not have the right to do that. They are saying that the FDA should only give "warnings" and request recalls, not be able to demand recalls. It's all there in black and white, although it does take some time to wade through all of it.

Marion Nestle's books are the greatest single resource on nutrition, food manufacturing and the political issues related to it available today. I have found them to be invaluable. Her best selling book Pet Food Politics about the massive 2007 pet food recalls probably did more to educate pet parents on what and how to feed their pets safely than any other resource. A must read.

Thank you for your warning.  I'll be sure to continue to monitor this issue.  I will also do some research on Marion Nestle, since I had never heard of her.  I did read the link you provided to her statement about Answers lawsuit and it isn't the same reason that Answer's Pet Food has provided for the reason they are suing.  I will continue to educate myself and do the best I can for my dogs.
