Barb's Doodles (Sally & Avery)

Profile Information

About Me:
Hi everyone,
I am a 51 year old teacher and mother of two grown children who have left the nest. It seemed only natural for my husband and I to get a dog when the springer that my children grew up with finally left us too. I did a lot of research before deciding to add a labradoodle to our family. We got Sally after she was featured in an article in the paper. I went to look at her in the pet store and fell in love. We had her for two years when we decided to add another.......Avery is 15 months now. We just love these dogs!
What Type of Doodle(s) do you have? What are their names? Tell us about your doodle(s) or any other pets you have!
Sally and Avery are both F1 Labradoodles. Sally is cream with some red on her back and ears. She has a lab-like coat which is easy care. No grooming is needed, but we clip her for the summer months. She was an active toddler, but at almost 3 years old she has mellowed and is very sweet. She is clever and playful. Avery is also cream colored, but with more red than Sally. His coat is very tight and curly. We have him groomed or his coat mats terribly. He is such a love bug. He loves to snuggle and thinks he is a lap dog, even though he weighs about 75 pounds now. The two of them are very close, and keep each other very busy wrestling, swimming, and chasing each other aroung the yard at warp speed.
Where did you get your doodle(s)?
Pet store
Why did you choose a doodle rather than another breed or mix?
I researched dogs. My husband and I wanted fun-loving, active, friendly dogs who didn't have any agressive tendencies. These dogs are well loved by all of our friends, relatives and neighbors.
What are Your Favorite Things to Do With Your Doodles?
We love to hike and climb mountains with Sally and Avery. We also like to just goof around in the house and out in the yard. They love fishing and swimming too. In the winter, they ice-fish with us and walk on the lake. They travel almost everywhere with us. They love riding in the pick-up truck and in the back of the convertible (with their seat belts on, of course)
Does your doodle(s) shed?
A little bit but nothing major
Who grooms your doodle(s)?
Sally needs no grooming. her coat is lab-like. Avery's coat is curly and crazy! We bring himt o a grroomer.
Favorite Doodle Products?
K-9 harness and seat belt, Kong with peanut butter, Marrow bones, Tug-o-war toys of any kind, rubber balls, squeak toys.

Crazy Jumpers!

Posted on August 4, 2008 at 11:48am 5 Comments

I'm wondering if there are any doodle owners out there who have "jumping doodle" problems. My two are a handful when company comes. It's bad whether the company is someone they know or not. They are just so excited to greet anyone that it's a three ring circus whenever someone comes to visit. A knock on the door sends them into excited euphoria every time, and the two of them get each other going. Even when my husband and I each hold one, it's a challenge until they calm down. One jumping… Continue

Ha-I had brought 2 huge bottles of water, and the 3 dogs polished them off before they even got in the car. They're still kind of sleepy today.

Luckily, when doodles get together they're more interested in each other.....at least at first. I have that same uneasiness about jumping. The other thing that can be a problem is folks who aren't "dog people" They don't necessarily appreciate the dogs running free. I guess it'll take some getting used to. I prefer taking them to less crowded beaches, so I may try Ferry beach. It has a far end away from the beach people. I'll let you know how that goes. Have a great weekend. The weather is supposed to be superb!

Oh, how I wish we could have been there... My two love to be around other dogs (and people) but they tend to jump up on people in the beginning. It can be nerve-wracking as the owner! Isn't a beach a wonderful place for them to run! Let me know when you plan to do it again - I'll be going back and forth several times in the next few weeks. Delete Comment

I just noticed a new member - Sue - from Ocean Park. Did you and Bentley Boo and Dunkin meet her on the beach this evening?

Barb, thanks for the notice. I won't be in Southern Maine tomorrow. I hope you have a great romp, let me know - and keep me posted if/when you have one again, we'd love to join in the fun!

Great! We'll all be arriving in a convertible with the doodles in back (as long as the weather cooperates). Having never done this before, a couple of questions?
Do your dogs run (no leashes?)
Are there generally many people there at that time of night? (with or without dogs)

Hi Barb,
I live in mid-Maine in Dover-Foxcroft. It is fun to watch the number of Maine doodle owners increase on this sight.

I bet by two Avery will be so graceful you won't be able to keep your eyes off her when she runs around :) Buddy was very clumsy as a teenager, but now he fly's like the wind and such a joy to watch.

I am so jealous watching your slide show! We used to have a lake cabin when I lived in WI, but we never had any dogs growing up. Now I have the dogs and I live in the desert! Go figure :) Love the pic of Sally watching over the side of the boat waiting for the fish in the net!!! Priceless
