gorgeous. Where did you get him and how old is he?
Mel is probably just going through his new coat stage and it will be better after he (and you) adjust to his new coat. Wolly coats are a little more problematic but I think just beautiful. My 4-yr-old ALD has a wolly coat and we do his grooming here at home and always have. He is about 3 inches all over, but his face is closer and his belly, feet, and ears trimmed. If you have the time and inclination, home grooming is the best.
