It may not have been with grooming, but he has had some bad experiences somewhere along the way. Start slow and see what he tolerates or likes. It may take you a while, but as he begins to trust you more, he will allow you to do things to his coat, face, toenails, etc. Poor guy! I feel sorry for him.
