All of sudden Fergie is shedding a lot. It's -18 deg. in Wisconsin. Probably not a good time for this. Would this still be her puppy coat or will she just shed - similar to a golden. She's a F1 with the poodle being the mother and the golden the father. What do you think? Not that this matters anymore because I'd love her if she went bald. We're curious though.
izzy is a F1 goldendoodle and she when she "threw" her puppy coat, there was a lot of fur...
but she did that earlier than 11 months (i think) and tucker is 5 months and he is starting to throw his puppy coat.
but with the change of seasons she will shed more than usual...
i find fur balls on our hardwood floors that have gathered from stray hairs, but just recently with the very cold weather we are having i am seeing more fur? and our cat who normally does not shed is shedding more as well...
it might be the heat in the house that is causing it, because i have had mine turned way up to keep it warm in here. not sure if that helped, but know that you are not alone in the "fight of the hair balls"!!!
Thanks. Izzy looks very much like Fergie so I guess she will shed. Really didn't shed at all until now. That's OK. I'll work with it. I see you got Tucker when Izzy was just over a year. I'm gettng another soon also. Fergie will be about 14 months I think. Was that the funnest this ever when you got the second? I can't wait. Fergies little friend comes and stays alot (another goldendoodle) and Fergie is always so sad when she goes home I really want the puppy to come ASAP. Husband not so sure.
Can you give me any advise for when the puppy comes?
mu hubby was "anti lets get another doodle plan!!" he says we are not running a doodle farm....i think differently, and i know if if was not restricted i would end up a doodle hoarder!! i look at them all the time, and one gets better than the next!! i could loose control very quickly!! ha ha!
what are you getting? another golden? male or female? i could get labeled as a female basher here....but, i would get a male. theory goes that 2 females (other that litter mates) tend to not get along as well! Izzy is "miss mother hen" with tucker, and you can see it in her face when he gets on her nerves (kinda like the kids in the back seat yelling " are we there yet for 5 hours....ha ha)
she took to him right away and they really are the best of friends! and to be honest, i have just let them go for the most part and figure it out on their own. the one tip i will share though is that the "i was here first, and i am the boss" thing will not happen for a few days, or even a couple of weeks, but it will happen...once fergie figures out that the puppy is there to stay, she will let him/her know!! it scared the crap out of me when she put him in his place, but it was only for a second, and i let her go...but it worked! and now if she doesn't want bothered she will just stare him down and he comes to me pouting! ha ha!
but it is sooo much fun with 2!! and my groomer said under 2 is the best age to introduce a new puppy because the older one still has some "puppy" left in them!!
please keep me posted on when you pick your new puppy!!
oh yes...the best part...i can't believe i forgot to tell you this....training is sooooo much easier....they follow the older dog and it makes training a cake walk!!
Again, thanks. I am going to get another girl. I've got horses and other animals and I can't say why buy I don't do well with boys. (Luckily, my husband excluded). Fergie hangs out at the stable where there are now 8 dogs and she hangs with the girls. The girls stay at my house when they are in heat an they get along great - even when in heat. I asked advice a few months ago an advice of my breeder who, of course, has 5 girls. She said is my heart is set on a girl to go with it. I just have to go with it. I'll let you know if I screwed up.
My breeder said she bred Fergies mom and hopefully it took. Just waiting to see a tummy. That would make the pup a full sister to Fergie - just not the same litter. Probably the beginning of April I'll be getting her - name???? I'm leaning toward Ginger or Reba. She'll be dark apricot - red. What do you think? There's a lot of Ginger's out there and I haven't heard to many Reba's. Maybe it's Reba -- OH I just don't know. I asked Fergie but she can't decide either.
I hope you're right about the training. I don't care so much because Fergie was really very easy. I have to keep things very smooth to keep DH happy. He does love Fergie to death so I don't think it's going to take much to have him warm up to the new puppy.
my hubby warmed up quickly...no worries! things will be fine!! and don't worry about screwing up, i am sure you won't!!! so many members have 2 females or 2 males...we just have1 of each..male/female...golden/labra....vanalla/choc....ha ha
and as far as names go, you are asking the WRONG person...i am horrible at it!!! it is sooo hard for me to decide if it is the right one!! i get so many in mind, i think i have the perfect name, then i change it again...i was stuck on farley for tucker, but once we got him home...he was not a farley at all!! but i do like ginger! get on the internet, there are sooo many to choose from! but once you see her, one will come to you that fits her personality! there are even a couple web sites that you enter the breed, color, personality...ect. and it come up with names to choose from, maybe that will help!
Don't worry about the sudden shedding. Lucy was just 11 months and all of a sudden there it was, hair all over the place. And she was matting terribly too. I was devastated because, as you, I am thinking , Great, no shedding when I got her. HaHaHa. This lasted until she was about 14 - 15 months old. Then just as quickly, it stopped. She is a very light shed er now and I am very happy. SO, hang in there, get her fur buzzed down and keep the matts under control. You will survive!!!!
Thanks. I hope this happens. Here's a pic of what is happening - This is all over my carpeting. Is this what you saw. Don't worry - I really love her anyway. I'll work with it. I have no matts though
Holly began some shedding at about eleven months and she is now twelve and a half months old. The shedding is really no big trouble, just unusual because she never shed at all earlier. Our last big dog was an 85 pound golden retriever - German Shepherd - Wolf hybrid and that wonderful gal would shed bushel baskets of hair twice yearly and bunches in between. So we don't really consider Holly's shedding any problem at all. If she stops shedding great, but if it continues at this rate that is no problem.
However, since Winter is just about over here in Southern California (80 degrees today) we will get Holly groomed with a shorter haircut. Judy usually grooms Holly herself but, would like a good groomer to start the shorter clip which Judy will maintain.
