I want to thank everyone who guided me with purchasing & stuffing the Kong ( our mini vacation went well, thanks to the Kong). I now need help again, I am sitting @ my desk at work feeling very guilty & sad that Duffy (6 months) is home alone in his cage. This is the first day he is alone for so long (8:30 - 3:10). The kids went back to school today, my husband & I are at work. I am off Sat & Sun & my husband is off Mon & Tues so Duffy will be alone Wed, Thurs & Fri. Oh! the guilt. Need to feel better about this situation & guided with what he should be left with on the 3 days he will be alone. :(
I feel your pain. My Kachi is home Mon, Tues & Thurs alone. I just had him neutered last week, so now I can take him to puppy daycare a couple times a week. He'll get to play, and romp around with other dogs, instead of just playing by himself. That should make him good and tired! I also take him for nice long walks in the mornings before I leave for work. Since I live close by my job, I can go home for lunch and let him out. He eats a little snack, we play, but I always feel so guilty when I have to put him back in the bathroom. Seriously, I wish I had two dogs just so they would be company for each other. Of course, my husband put an end to that idea!!
I work at home, so I do do not have to leave ours often, but I would feel the same way. We love them like children. I can tell you that both of my dogs sleep almost the entire day (especially if it is raining out), so if they are at my feet or in the crate really should make no difference. So, I bet right now he is sleeping too. When you go home give him lots of love and a nice walk and he will forget in a few seconds that he was left most of the day:) Don't beat yourself up over it.
I'm home most of the day, except for running here and there for an hour or two, and I can tell you that they sleep most of the day. I know it's hard, but Duffy has a wonderful family and a loving home, which is a fabulous life for a dog! It's probably better that you are not at his beckon call 24/7, he'll really appreciate the time spent with you all! I don't leave anything special for our Puddles when we leave him and I was advised by our trainer to continue to crate him when we go out (he's 8 months old) because it's his "den." Cheer up, Duffy has a great life!!!!!
Try putting some plain oatmeal, mixed kinda thick, in the kong and freezing it over night. It lasts much longer than anything else and they love the cold! also try putting a treat in the middle. so it would be filled partly with oatmeal, then stick a treat in there, then fill the rest with oatmeal... they love it!
