CHECK OUT THESE DOGS!!!-LOOKS LIKE A DOODLE TO ME!-Looking for a Rescue Doodle?- Things You Should Know About Using PetFinder

LISTED BELOW ARE A FEW DOGS IN SHELTERS THAT LOOK LIKE THEY ARE DOODLES BUT ARE CLASSIFIED AS OTHER BREEDS- SEE BELOW FOR ALL DETAILS......WILL UPDATE ACCORDINGLY....

I just wanted to post a few facts about using the PetFinder search options for locating Doodles and what I have discovered.

Number 1- PetFinder actually lists "Cock-a-poo" as one of it's breeds yet Labradoodle or Golden Doodle is not a breed search option( we'll have to petition PetFinder to add a "Doodle" breed catagory)..So when searching for Doodles on PetFinder, we all of course look under the following:

Poodle
Standard Poodle
Labrador Retriever

Many shelters and rescues especially those that are located in more rural areas where shelter techs are perhaps not so familiar with Doodles will list what are obviously Doodles as being "other" breed mixes..The mixed coat textures, colors and types of Doodles can be confusing to an unfamiliar shelter or rescue...Especially the Parti's, Mini's and Phantoms... Mini's being one of the most unrecognizable and usually are classified as Cock-a-poos, Bichon mixes, Tibetan Terriers, Löwchen, Portuguese Water Dog or Spanial mixes. You'd think a long tail would be an indication...but not always the case...

I've seen Parti's and Phantoms listed as Bearded Collie mixes, Briard mixes and even Airedale Terrier mixes ( the ears on these dog breeds are set much higher than on a Doodle )....I've seen Standard Doodles especially those that are Black listed as Standard Schnauzer mixes, Black Russian Terrier mixes, Irish Wolfhound mixes and Bouvier des Flanders mixes.

While with rescue dogs there is of course no gaurantee of lineage, one who is familiar with the Doodle characteristics can surley spot one...I have actually called some of these shelters and rescues and pointed out to them that they may have mis-classified a dog suggesting they re-classify as a Doodle...I explain that by doing this they also increase that dogs chances of being adopted....I'm happy to report that they actually do this 90 percent of the time!....I also let Shannon and Jo at IDOG/ Poo Mix Rescue know if I come across any mis- classified Doodles and if they agree with me, they post these dogs on their site....

But if you are looking for a rescue Doodle, I strongly encourage you to search through other shaggy breeds..... For example, I have actually looked under the following breeds and found Doodles:

For Mini's and Mediums:

Bearded Collie
Bichon Frise
Cockapoo
Tibetan Terrier
Löwchen
Portuguese Water Dog
Schnauzer
Wheaten Terrier
Wirehaired Terrier

For Standards:

Afghan Hound
Airedale Terrier
Bearded Collie
Black Russian Terrier
Bouvier des Flanders
Briard
Giant Schnauzer
Irish Terrier
Irish Wolfhound
Old English Sheepdog
Portuguese Water Dog
Sheep Dog
Wheaten Terrier

Of course, be sure to check out IDOG/ Poo Mix Rescue and The Doodle Zoo Forum as well as they also post shelter, rescue and rehome Doodles...Good Luck in your Doodle search!

Bearded Collie or Phantom Doodle?

Notes:
Hi I am maybe and i am a great dog. I love everyone. My adoption donation is $150 and comes with a spay/neuter agreement and am up to date on my vaccines. Please come take me home to spend the rest of my fun loving days with you. Puppies and dogs require serious adopters. They take time and patience to learn what you want from them and they intern will then give it to you, most of the time. Please do not adopt if you are someone who will become tired of a pet and "throw it away". We want only adopters that are willing to give a lifetime of love and care to our animals. If you have children in your family, they must understand how to treat animals before you bring them into your house. New animals are fearful and anxious. They need gentleness and love from the beginning. Your relationship will develop from how you treat your new pet.

Before we purchased Holly from Cheyenne Valley, we had sent in an application for one of eight really cute Goldendoodle puppies that we had located on petfinder.com. The nice thing was that these lovely puppies convinced Judy that a Goldendoodle would be a great pet.

We thought that there would be absolutely no problem because we had just lost an eleven year old rescued golden retriever-German shepherd-wolf cross from cancer. Judy was the West Coast coordinator of American Maltese Rescue and we have a one acre fenced area for our big dog to run and play.

Wrong! We did not hear from the rescue people for two weeks after we sent in the application. We emailed them (there was no contact phone number) and received a rather curt reply; please don't contact us. We will contact you if your application has been approved.

We decided that we would purchase a Goldendoodle from Heather Goines at Cheyenne Valley kennel. This was a no-brainer since: Heather had health checked the parents, we saw pictures of the parents and were told we would be welcome to visit Cheyenne Valley; Heather had multiple recommendations from satisfied puppy owners; Heather temperament tests the parents and the puppies and told us that she would select a puppy along the temperament lines we desired (on a scale of 1-7 where 1 was timid and 7 was aggressive, Holly scored; 4 - right in the middle) AND the rescue organization was charging $600 for the Goldendoodle puppy while Heather was charging $1,200 with all of the testing and guarantees. Actually, the initial cost of a dog may be irrelevant if you incur vast medical bills during the dog's live. We probably spent $10,000 on medical care for our lovely, faithful but, unhealthy rescue dog: Sara Lee.

We placed a deposit on the puppy which was to become our Holly (letting Heather select the pup for us) and soon after that (about four weeks from when we placed the application for the rescue doodle) we received an email saying, "Congratulations, we have selected you to get one of our rescue puppies!"

We replied. "Sorry, too late! We have placed a deposit on a puppy already".

We absolutely loved our Sara lee who was our rescue Golden Retriever-German Shepherd-Wolf but, Sara had terrible health problems. We hope to avoid some of those problems by getting a puppy from healthy lines and from a reputable breeder.

We are extremely happy how Holly is turning out! She is everything we wanted in a doodle and a dog.
Wow Richard! $600 for a doodle is backyard breeder pricing! Glad you found Heather.
Richard, I completely relate to what you are saying.... I wanted a rescue for various reasons one being it's the right thing to do and two because $1200-2500 for a puppy was completely out of my budget....For the record, I put in applications for Doodles all over the place and was even willing to drive to Ish Kabib to adopt one...but some of these rescue organizations are slow to get back to you, never do or they make you jump through hoops to adopt.....I remember telling one particularly rude B**CH at one organization, " Do you actually WANT to find a good home for this dog?...Or do you just get off on being difficult?" I happened on Blake only because my sister works for HSUS and she informed me about the great Amish puppy mill Doodle resue that took place last year and directed me to the facility where the pups were being housed....

I gave the Humane Society $200 for Blake ....By the time I finished treating his sarcoptic mange, worms, giardia, conjunctivitis and IBS I had incurred approx. $3000 in vet bills.....Could've just spent the dough on a healthy puppy from a reputable breeder...But then I wouldn't have this special little guy in my life....Rescue dogs actually KNOW they were rescued...They tell you how much they appreciate you every day...

Point being one rescues because it's the right thing to do....Whatever expenses result from adopting an animal in need?...are an investment in a wonderful little life that might not have been saved otherwise.....
