thank you all for your positive responses to hubby and the second puppy. Now he wants me to ask people - honestly - Is anyone sorry they got the second puppy and if so, why?
Yes, we joke about having a second dog too when it comes to the vet bills, but we do not regret it at all. She is a doll, and so much fun to have around.
When Calli was about 6 months old, we decided to adopt another puppy so she would have a playmate. We chose a cocker spaniel puppy because we'd had them before and loved them. Rena was a sweet and loving dog, but was very mean to Calli. It was like she had to make up for her size in "braun". We did our best to make it work but soon realized that Rena needed to be in a "one-dog" home. We knew we couldn't just give her to anyone, and luckily we had very good friends who had decided to get a puppy. They had met her and loved her, so it was a natural fit. We still keep in touch with Rena and send her birthday gifts and such and she visits when they are in town. She still tries to act like a rotweiler in a 15 pound body with Calli but remains perfectly behaved with humans.
While Calli didn't care for the nasty behavior Rena gave her, she did enjoy having someone to play with, so we decided to get another doodle-- something we should have done from the get-go. Cooper is perfectly suited and they get along like soulmates.
I strongly advise making sure that whatever puppy you bring in as a second pet, it is one whose temperament matches your existing dog, regardless of its size.
We have a doodle named Cooper too! He is such a sweet baby boy - a bit rambunctuous at times- black with curly hair and white spots! I agree with your feelings. I have a 5 yr old tea-cup yorkie that we have had to really work with Cooper (who is only one) to be gentle with because my yorkie Ellie thinks she is big (and was here first!) and Coop thinks he is little!
At the moment I only have one (a 9 month old GD), but I'm really looking forward to the day that we can bring home another doodle =) We want to wait until Kali is a little older and we can afford the added expense of another dog.
i got stella for rocket because he loved my friends dog thats big. besided doing the whole potty training over again its been the greatest they play together all day long. hes been calmer now that he has a friend there when i am at work
We have always owned two dogs because they need companions too. When we are working we don't worry about them being lonely because they have each other to play with. I will say that our two dogs have always been the same breed. You know my opinion -- go for it!
We think it might be a bit late to get another pup in the house. Rusty is 8yrs old this month and would be very put out if a pup turned up and took some of our attention away from him, We have thought about recently. or I have, but not sure what the reaction would be with a much older dog who by the way is not spoilt HAHAHAHA not by me anyway.
You would be surprised. Our Summer was 6yo when we brought Giada home, and she began to act like apuppy again. I could not believe it, she was so full of life!!!
No - we are not sorry that we got a second or third dog. They all are special and loving. the important part of bringing a new puppy into the house is the introduction and making sure that you always give enough attention to the first dog. It is very much the same thing as when you have a second child.
