Hello, I took my 2 mini doodles into the groomer just for a sanitary cleanup (around the private parts) and they both were shaved down to the skin! Thier poor little buns look like they have rug burn!! Any ideas on what I can put on them to soothe thier irritation down there? Any ideas would be very appreciated!
Thank you! Nicole, Ruffa and Taner!
When Kachi's tummy was shaved for his neutering procedure, he was miserable with the burn & itching. I bought some Excel Hydrocortisone salve for dogs (PetSMart), and put it on him. It helped him tremendously.
Hi Nicole, sorry the boys had this happen. I would like to add, that keep a watch out for infection. A razor burn can become a Staff infection ..maybe call the vet Nicole and see if they can mention signs to watch for.
Hope the boys are feeling better soon and can get some relief, that has to smart.
The first thing I would do is soak the area with a warm, wet washcloth 3-4 times each day for 3 days (longer if needed). Then apply Gold Bond Medicated power on the irritated skin, it soothes the itch. Just watch for infection in the area.
I bought this stuff called Organic Dog Salve, by The Merry Hempsters company. It worked great for the "Butt Rash". I have also used Bag Balm.
I hate when the groomer does it to Jordan, so much so that I bought some clippers and I am now clipping her myself.
Nicole...I TOTALLY understand what you are talking about...I have had multiple experiences with this and with HORRIBLE groomers!...Blake would ALWAYS have a rash and even burns from the "sanitary" and the poor little guy would be miserable for weeks following......and no matter how many times that I complained to my old groomer they would do it anyway...They INFURIATED me!!!...Some advice?....Apply a little Neosporin and try to keep the surrounding area dry......
INSIST that the groomer clip that area with scissor NOT with the electric clippers.....The clippers will burn that sensitive area VERY easily.....Especially if they have recently changed the blades and are lax in their efforts to cool the blade down every so often.....Many groomers are in a rush to pack in as many dogs as they can into a day and neglect to give the clippers a "cool down"...Then our poor Doodles get burned and irritated....I personally HATE the "sanitary" look anyway....They always clip into the inside leg hair which looks rediculous on a Doodle that is supposed to have a "puppycut" or casual "shaggy" clip look to begin with....
I finally found a woman here in Montclair who actually knows how to clip a Doodle correctly and not make them look like Bischons or Poodles....She also "ethically" cools down her blade frequently and really takes her time with each animal....I love her because she only takes a few dogs a day and does not cage them...They are free to run around and interact and play while waiting there turn for the tub and table.....
As I said, INSIST that the groomer NOT do the full "sanitary" and if they need to clean up the area it be done with scissors NOT with clippers.....
I was going to say exactly what Jacquie said...there are some dogs who are just extremely sensitive to shavers of any kind and need to be hand-scissored. You may have shop around for a groomer who is experienced, skilled enough, and willing to do this. I had a poodle who had to be entirely hand-scissored for all groomings...no electric clippers or razors permitted. I found the best groomer I have ever had, and I continue to use her with Jack, even though he really doesn't need any trimming at all. Such a groomer does not necessarily need to be expensive...the cost for a full grooming-bath, brush, nails, ears, anals, etc- for my 78 lb. dog is $35.00. You will probably have to find a smaller private shop, rather than the "Petsmart-type" places. Good Luck!
