Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

My poor doodle became terribly matted and had to be shaved...my wife was convinced that he became depressed and covered all of the mirrors!!! However, i think I've found the answer..Cowboy Magic Detangler...initially made for horse's manes and tails and fantastic to get the tangles out of long-haired dogs (even safe for humans, I'm told). A small amount goes a long way and can be used on both dry and wet coats...great after a swim, as water is a major cause of matting. It's made a big difference in the life (and coat) of Oliver the labradoodle.

We also have a problem with tangles and mats. It is a constant battle to keep Sunny from getting matted. Where is this product available?

Cowboy Magic is available online...they have a website and I understand that it's available through Drs. Foster and Smith (also online) and I got mine at a Feed & Tack store in my area, as it was originally for horses. It's very easy to use...I find that after I finish applying it to one part of his coat at a time, I then brush him out with a pin brush. I wasn't aware that water actually promotes matting until my groomer told me, and boy is it true. I take a tube of this stuff to the lake when we go and after a towel dry use the detangler and brush him.
Jenel....I took a look at Sidiqi on your site and I can understand why he's getting matted....he's very much like Oliver, although he is a labradoodle. Ollie's coat is tight, like Sidiqi's and that makes it almost impossible, at least for me, to get a comb all the way down close to his skin. I know that shaving him makes your tremble, but you may have no choice and, hopefully, will do it only once. Never allow him to be shaved close enough for his skin to show...too sensitive to sun and can burn...but leaving about an inch of hair will allow you to use the detangler and brush him regularly and hopefully never have a similar problem again. It took about 2 1/2 months for Ollie's hair to grow to a respectable length after we finally gave in (to the groomer) and had him shaved, but, so far, it's been a lot easier for me to prevent matting. the real test will be next week when we're up at Lake Tahoe and Ollie gets to swim.
Thanks for the tip One of my doodles is very curly and swims nearly everyday. I, too, succumbed to the groomer and had him shaved.... He looks silly but dries fast. Will try Cowboy Magic as a detangler as he grows out.
