About a month ago my puppy chewed a small piece if the edge of my carpet.
This was while I left her with the kids for a short while, so now if I leave with the kids she is crated.
She's back to doing it--RIGHT in front of me! I scold her--and she knows I am mad--she will put her tail between her legs, her ears down and run in her crate!
This is what I have done without sucsess:
I have been watching her--she'll do it right in front of me!
Bitter apple--does not work!
Scolding
She gets LOTS of exercise (3 mile walk in the woods- most off leash daily+games) and attention--this is a dog that has 3 people interacting with her ALL day, a yard to run in, and other dogs to play with--she is hardly crated except at night. So please do not tell me she needs more attention or exercise.
Thank God we had hard wood floors underneath our old carpet... we just got rid of the carpet! lol.. Our carpet was old and had a little piece of carpet sticking up... he was all over that! That was during his puppy stage, I think he would have stoped on his own as he got older but I didn't give him the chance!
Well, we just built this home a few years ago, so I'm affraid the only thing under the carpet is cement! I am working with an online trainer, and they gave me some tips. Thanks!
I would have written back sooner, but was away for the week-end! The trainer did say to go back to ambilical cord training and give her a correction with the leash is she goes back--but the thing is the last time it was a whole month. we shall see. She has been an angel, before this started:( My husband was with her all week-end and she stayed away from it.
yup...as soon as I feel ready my carpet is going to! LOL...it looks yucky and I'm grateful to have the floors underneath.
I don't know what else you could do, I assume you've given her something better so that you can deter her that way. The only other option I guess is crating her when she does it....
I wonder if it might help to keep a leash and correction collar on her (while she is supervised of course so she doesn't get the leash caught up on furniture and get stuck) and give her an emotionless correction. Sometimes I think that scolding makes dogs cower in submission but they may not necessarily understand what the scolding is related to... Depends on the dog though...Cass has always been responsive to scolding. But a quick, uncomfortable, but SHORT correction coupled with a firm NO might get through to her faster...then redirect her to something else to do like SIT or DOWN and praise her for that something else then release her. In the meantime is there any way to put a crate over that area or a box or dog bed or something to cover it up in hopes she might forget about it if she stops practicing the habit for a while?
We have not had that exact issue Tamara but Toby dug a hole to China in our carpet. It just so happened to be in a spot that the cat threw up on (sorry, gross I know, Kitty can't help it though - long story). We promptly sprayed the area with the odor neutralizer they sell for pet stains and such. . . . . Nature's Miracle. Could it be that there is an odor she can smell and wants to eat whatever she thinks it is? Maybe that will work and you just might have it available. Good luck!!
