Sidiqi's birthday is still more than a month away, but what can I say? I'm goofy about my dog. I'm starting to think about how to celebrate his birthday. I think I want to make him a special treat. I'd love for everyone to share their favorite recipe for dog treats. I want to make something from scratch, not just go out and buy a treat.
I tend to stay away from recipes that are based on liver. Dogs love liver but, the problem is that they love it two much and sometimes their stool smells too inviting for them.
Here is a healthy recipe that is not based on liver.
Oatmeal Tuna Biscuits
Ingredients
• 1 cup yellow cornmeal or 1/14 cup corn flour
• 1 cup oatmeal
• 1/4 tsp. baking powder
• 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
• 1 small can tuna in oil -- undrained
• 1/3 cup water
Directions
Grind oatmeal in processor to make a coarse flour. Set aside in small bowl. In food processor, whirr tuna with the oil, and water then add all the rest of ingredient. Pulse till mixture forms a ball, Pulse to knead for 2-3 minutes. Knead on floured surface till it forms a soft ball of dough. Roll out to a 1/8"-1/4" thickness. Cut into shapes. Bake on lightly greased cookie sheet , at 350 for 20-25 minutes. Cool completely.
All our dogs (1 Doodle and 4 Maltese - as well as our cat - love fish). Fish never goes to waste in our home. I brought home over 60 pounds of fillets (salmon, halibut and various bottom fish) from a fishing trip to Alaska. That equates to a lot of leftovers for our dogs and cat. I always cook a little extra in order to flavor their kibble.
I am going to try this recipe tomorrow with some leftover salmon.
I just found this recipie on another site for pumpkin-oatmeal cookies. It's a great way to use up that extra pumpkin if you give it to your dogs for an upset tummy.
Pre-heat oven to 350.
Ingredients:
3.5 cups of oats
1.5 cups of pumpkin
1/4 cup of applesause (plain)
1 tsp. of vanilla extract
Combine all ingredients. Roll into small balls and place on cookie sheet. Lightly press each ball with a fork. Bake 15 minutes. Let cool and enjoy

Here's an easy liver treat recipe..even my fussy doodle loves it!

1 lb. raw liver
2 cloves garlic
1 box corn muffin mix
Place liver and garlic in blender and "blend"......add corn muffin mix. Pour into a greased baking sheet or 9x13 size pan (something with sides). Bake according to muffin directions until "set"......Cool and cut into tiny squares.
