Isn't it amazing, you think that you'll never get your dog totally housetrained - then one day you realize that you haven't had to clean up any pee on the rug (always on the rug, never the bare floor) for a week or two! And your dog actually asks to go out at the appropriate time. I thought that day would never come!!!
Funny....I have two doodles and one is year old. It seemed like it would NEVER end!!! Well it did. Now we practically have to force her out. She must have a bladder of steel!!! Now two weeks ago we got our 2nd doodle....and we are doing it all over again. I have hope since I know it will happen...but oh man I cannot wait!!
That sounds like our doodles. Rufus has a bladder that can hold all day, the younger one (now 6 months) will pee whenever I let him out. I love that he does it on command, Rufus never did and never will! Now that they are both trained, I don't miss the cleaning or the middle of the night walks!
Congratulations to the whole Radcliffe family. I can relate to your excitement, Libby. Your story reminded me of being on the maternity floor with my 6 lb baby girl (first child) and sharing a room with a woman and her 10 lb baby boy (her fourth boy). I had so many questions of this experienced mom, I bet I irritated her more than her stitches. At one point I asked about potty training and she said, "Don't worry it will happen before they start school." I loved that advice and use the principle with my dogs--not to worry, it will happen. Again, congratulations.
There wasn't any tapering off with Holly. One day she was a "goldenpuddle" waiting to happen and then the next day (right about 3-months) she became instantly house trained and has not had any "accidents" since then.
It was amazing and certainly a relief. One thing that made her "goldenpuddle" days easier on us is that, since we live in a warm climate (San Diego, CA County), and since we have raised multiple litters of Maltese puppies in the past; our house is completely tiled. However, even with the ceramic tile floors, it was wonderful to realize she was house trained.
This also allowed us to give her freedom of the bedroom at night which she enjoys. She no longer gets us up several times during the night as she did when she spent nights in a crate.
Nope. I tried with Rosco as a 8-9 week old pup. Had a chunk of sod in a tupperware container. He did pee there, but then decided digging it up was more fun. So that idea was trashed. He then thought the purpose of puppy pads was to be torn up too. It's probably a good thing or else my house would have smelled of pee and poop every day.
What's funny is that one day, when I thought Rosco had it down, I was on the computer typing up a response to someone about the very subject of house training...when diagonally behind me Rosco let out a stream. I think that was his second to last accident.
