Just wanted to take a moment to remember the wonderful canines who took part in the rescue efforts in the days following the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.  There were over 100 dogs working rescue during that time. When these pictures were taken only 15 remained and now only 10.

Some of our unsung heroes, photos by Charlotte Dumas.

Dumas has also released a book about these dogs entitled Retrieved.

The whole time I watched that video, all I could think of was if you had to be there helping to find people, remains, etc. and witness the things those people had to witness, it must have helped to be able to reach out and touch a dog for comfort. How sad about Sirius and I wonder how many of these dogs suffered because of the air quality, etc.
Laurie, if you haven't had a chance to read the story that Carla posted a link to yet I urge you to do so! It is one man and his dog's story of their experience at the ruins of the towers. And just as you said, it recounts the impact that his dog had on so many individuals. How the dog was able to bridge the emotional gap that no other human seemed able to do for people who had been terribly traumatized. How people would just run up and grab the dog and hang on!!!  It's very moving.
Thanks for sharing....very special "heros".
Thanks for reminding us of these canine heroes, Ricki.  Our beloved and brave companions just don't live long enough.
Oh boy, amen to THAT Pat!!!
