Now that spring has sprung in most cold places in Canada and the US, this story tells a most cautionary tale of dogs around ponds, rivers, lakes, with thin ice. Keep all our doodles safe. Dog Falls Through Thin Ice

OMD, I'm so glad he's okay! What a horrible experience for both the dog and the owner!

that's so scary!

I can't imagine it....terrifying I'm sure.

How horrifying, I'm glad he is okay!

Yikes...scary.  Glad the outcome was good.

How scary! Thanks for sharing this. It's a good reminder that things can happen in the blink of an eye and to always be vigilant of our surroundings!

Scary.  I always worry about my dogs in the ocean because if they got swept out, I would not try to rescue them even though I am a very good swimmer.  The same thing with mountain lions.  Yes, they are around here, and I had decided long ago that if one of them got into an altercation with a mountain lion, I would leave the area.  So, there are good reasons to keep our pets on leash, but also good reasons to let them run free if you think it is safe.  This was a good reminder to always evaluate the areas where you go with your pets and act accordingly.

Just before Hurricane Sandy was able to hit Long Island, my DH and I went down to the beach for a last walk before the storm.  Quincy was just little, still sleeping in a crate at night.  When we got down there, a big Golden was swimming pretty far out, chasing ducks/swans.  His owner was frantic to get him back to shore, but this golden had his own ideas.  Then it started to look like he couldn't get back. So scary!  Even though it is Long Island Sound and does not have the waves the south shore has, it was still very choppy and rough with the winds just howling by then. The owner left to go and get his oar for his kayak!  I was appalled to think he was going to go into that choppy water, but empathized with his fear for his dog.  So very luckily, I guess seeing that his master was leaving, the dog swam near the shore and my DH, bless him, was able to lure the dog using the pocketful of treats he had for Quincy and his calm calling and cajoling.  When the master got back, we had the Golden by his collar and the owner had his leash ready.  My husband was soaked, but he said it was well worth it.  I just stood the whole time holding Quincy tight.
