Yippee!  Yesterday we drove up  to St. Peterburgh, Fl., to the Fl. Poodle Rescue group and drove

home with a beautiful, one year old, black male Standard Poodle!  He is just the sweetest boy ever!

Mitzi is doing fine with her new friend, teaching him the ropes around here.  He is already eyeing the pool

and I am only concerned he will jump  in before he fully heals from being neutered.  Our only problem is that his name "Buddy"  just doesn't fit.  I hope we find a better name soon.  Any good suggestions?

Oops...

I forgot to add the name Marious...or the proper spelling Marius.

He's the romantic lead in the play Les Miserables.  Very French...(smile)

I've been saving this name for my own future dog, but I think it fits your guy. Nico. (pronounced Neeko)

French, elegant, and has that hard consonant sound followed by the O, which is recommended for recall and other training purposes.

You might keep this in mind when you are naming him.  Given the color I see in the picture you posted, I don't think he will stay Black.  My guess is that he will go Grey.

Maybe blue? Is there a way to tell?

I like the name Nico! Nico and Mitzi sound good together.

I'd need to see more pictures, but he has a duskiness to his coat that says he will not be true Black.

I don't know if he is a Blue.  I would need to see his face shaved and the color of his coat close to his skin to know more.  A true Blue has a real "blue" cast to their coat.  They may lighten over time to a gun metal grey or pewter color.  The first picture is an example of a true dark Blue.  Note the color of the skin.  The second picture shows a Poodle that is a light Blue.  Some people might call this Silver, but I think Silver should be reserved for sterling or platinum Poodles.

Ooooh that first one is really beautiful!  I love it!

My friend has a poodle mutt of some variety that started off black but in the sun had auburn highlights.  Her skin looked like it had a hint of blue so for a long time I thought perhaps she'd be a 'blue' of some kind.  But she stayed mostly black with some highlights around her face and a few sprinkles of white hairs.

As happy as I am with this wonderful new addition to our family, you DK members are

really adding to it with all your kind responses.

His hair on his snout is only about 1/4 inch long, but I will shave it closer and take more

pictures to help see his true color.  I will also try to get a close up of his skin color, if the

camera and light doesn't affect it.   It almost looks as if there is some dark brown in his

fur in the morning sun ; or as Adina suggests, it may indeed be auburn.

Best of all, we just got back from our vet and he is in good health!  We just have to go back in 10 days to have the "wire" sutures removed from his neutering.  He said it was old

fashioned, but keeps the dog from licking the stiches, ow!

Carol, you obviously know poodles.  Thank you for your input.

I love the blues, too. But Mr. No Name is gorgeous no matter what color he ends up!
As in Jack : )
Actually, Jack's name was Jake when I adopted him, and we had to change it, because Jake is my GS's name. But Jack was named for a GSD foster I had who was released from the police K-9 program because he had megaesophagus. And his name was Jacko. You'll find a lot of police dogs have names that follow this idea, which is recommended by the Monks of New Skete among others.
I know, I read a couple of their books. I was going to have the perfectly trained, obedient, monk-like dogs---my son teases me about this all the time. But then again, I am not too monk-like in terms of hours, dedication etc. My "cell" would make a good monk cringe--too many electronic gizmos and too much clutter! Well , at least I manged the two syllable ending in a vowel names : )
