This story was in our paper this morning.  In many ways it's heartwarming that this couple is helping so many children with emotional handicaps through "Doodle Therapy".  I do worry though about how effectively they are able to manage the care and breeding of this many dogs.  And of course, the whole issue of health testing (which isn't mentioned).  The writer clearly spent time in this house in order to develop the story, so if there were obvious issues of care of the dogs, I'm sure that would have surfaced....but who knows.  What do you think?  Here's the link.

I am surprised the town allows so many dogs to be in one home. Also, doesn't the fact that these are special needs kids mean the state is in some way still paying for their care. Don't they supervise, or check up on these placements? Can they think this is a good situation?
UGH...On one hand I commend them for wanting to help children in need...on the other hand I don't see how they could possibly care for 20+ dogs and 13 special needs kids.  I have 2 healthy kids and 7 dogs (3 are S/N) and find it difficult some days.  It's great that the kids are socializing the pups but are the parent dogs all given one on one and are they snuggled and exercised every day?  I just don't see how they could manage all that.  I think being with the dogs and pups is good for the kids, but it could be accomplished with one or two mothers.  There are more things like health testing and that also are a concern.
UGH!

I have an update on this story that once again proves that DKrs are the smartest group EVER!  Here's the latest update from our paper....interestingly enough it did not appear on the front page.

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

A story on Page 1 Friday about George Harasz of Glastonbury, who cares for troubled children and breeds dogs, did not say that Harasz is on probation for a misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals.

Harasz was cited Dec 16, 2009 after Glastonbury's animal control officer went to his home and found about 50 dogs in the basement.  The room had inadwquate ventilation and the smell of urine and feces was overwhelming, police said.  Harasz's kennel license allowed him to have 10 dogs, police said.

Harasz was cooperative with the animal control officer and took immediate steps to correct the problems. Harasz told police that he was breeding the dogs and did not expect all of the dogs to get pregnant and deliver their litters at the same time.

In court, Harasz was granted accelerated rehabilitation, a form of probation.  If he successfully completes the probation, the charge will be dismissed March 25.  Harasz said Monday that he was in the process of cleaning the room where the dogs were kept when authorities visited his home.

Great breeder, right?  WTD!  He didn't expect them to all get pregnant and deliver at the same time.  I wonder if he even knows who mated with who?  Horrendous!

This is horrific. It is upsetting that whoever initially wrote the article didn't do enough research to realize this.

WOW!  So what about those children?  If you are unscupulous in your care and concern for animals, how does that bode for your ability to care for children?  Especially troubled children.  Especially 13 troubled chlldren.  UGH!

Which are too many too.

Well, FINALLY some of the truth is starting to surface!! I agree Jane-hasn't he figured out what is causing the dogs to get pregnant????

I'm concerned about the kids too!! Number one-are they being cared for properly and number two-what are they learning from all this about the proper care of animals??

This whole story just makes me so sad. What is wrong with people?????

Unfortunately there is a lot wrong here and it's very sad.
So Sad!!  I feel just terrible for those dogs and kids.  :o(  Why on earth would the state allow kids to live in a home where an adult is on probation for a misdemeanor charge??  If he is only allowed 10 dogs, why does he still have 20?

Let's all hope and pray that now that the truth is out "people" step in and watch this family. Hopefully the scrutiny of the public will garner some fixes in this situation.

Oh and what kind of reporter doesn't see this issues and report as such? It appears that all she wanted was a so called "feel good" story for the paper. Disgusted.

Ugh!
