A Terrible Thing Happened

My neighbor stopped this afternoon to talk to me. She said she had not been able to talk about it until today. Thursday night in her driveway Sundrop, her 6 year old beagle, ran in front of her car chasing a night bird and my neighbor hit her before she could get the slow moving vehicle stopped.
My neighbor's husband and son took Sundrop to the animal E. R. which is 50+ miles away. Sundrop is still in intensive care. She has broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder and a punctured and bruised lung. The E.R. vet tried to relocate the shoulder without success due to pain. Monday the surgeon is going to look at it and may be able to relocate it with Sundrop under anesthesia, if not, there will be surgery.
My neighbor is all to pieces over this and feels tremendous guilt.
Please send positive thoughts and prayers for Sundrop's recovery.

UPDATE: Sun drop had surgery on her shoulder to relocate it today (2/26/13). She went through surgery fine. Unless something unforseen happens before tomorrow she will be coming home. My neighbor read each and every one of the replies to this discussion and was overwhelmed by the support from the DK community.

UPDATE ON SUNDROP #2
I got this email from Sundrop's mom today (3/3/13).
"Out of the woods
Sleeping most of the day due to painkillers and sedatives but enjoying the brief outdoor time. Wanda said the cone could come off so its much better. Long way to go but if the shoulder stays in place she is good to go. Thank you for all of your thoughts."

Oh what a terrible tragedy. One of Gavin's playmates up North - a white shepherd - died a few months ago when his owner accidently ran over him. She is still inconsolable :( Hoping for a better result for poor Sundrop.

Oh how sad for the poor family...I'm sure she feels heartbroken. Sadly, things like this do happen no matter how cautious we try to be. I hope Sundrop (such a sweet name!) comes through all of this alright. Sending prayers!

It is terrible, but it happens all the time. Dogs get hit and run over and children also. We have had some children hit in Salinas. It is such a responsibility driving a car around animals and small children. But the dog is where he needs to be at a time like this. Hopefully he survives. I know the neighbor feels terrible guilt, but it wasn't her fault. I guess pets and kids need to be behind closed doors.
