Every time we take her out, every single time she finds gum and we have to fight with her to spit it out.  She doesnt swollow it she actually just chews it, I think it has to be ABC gum though.  We live in an appartment and I think the gum belongs to a man that lives next to us, my husband says he has seen him throw out the gum onto the grass a couple times.  Its so nasty taking chewed gum out of her mouth should I tell that man to stop throwing his gum on the grass? will Abby grow out of this? or should I just find some chicken flavored gum so she can have her own?

Oh, gross...LOL! No one should be throwing gum out, especially where people walk.Yuck!! You should probably work on the "Leave it" command so Abby doesn't pick up the gum at all. Sugar free gum is not safe for dogs. You will probably have a better chance of training Abby than the idiot throwing out his gum :)

True, we just started the "leave it" command we just need to practice it more.

Maybe you could teach the neighbor the "Don't drop it," command :)

It is a very valuable command, especially on walks.

Gum is seriously poison to dogs so don't let her get it. I don't let my guys take anything off the ground and have taught them both the 'leave it' command which you really need in situations like this.

I agree with the training of the leave it command. Invaluable in so many situations. As for the man in question, maybe if you discuss with him the problem this is causing you, and the possible harm this can cause Abby,( let alone the mess of gum in hair, on peoples shoes,...) he might be willing to just throw it away elsewhere, or wait till he's in his apartment, for other dogs and shoes to avoid. Who knows, it might work.

You need to make sure that she cannot pick up anything off the ground, not just with the leave it command, but by controlling her with the leash and collar and keeping her head up. If she happens to pick up a piece of sugar-free gum, you'll be in the emergency vet clinic, it is toxic to dogs. And there can be other dangerous things lying on the ground outdoors as well, so it's a good idea to start working on stopping her from doing this now.

Teddy likes to chew gum too! He knows leave it but sometimes he gets a piece without my knowing it. My first clue is he's chewing and chewing and chewing. When I say "drop it" the gum literally comes flying out of his mouth. Luckily he has never swallowed it because I understand it is very dangerous. I have thought before they should make special gum for dogs.

That's what we should do....invent Dog chewing Gum! Think of all the money we would save in dog chews that don't last very long or that we have to worry about splintering or them choking on. We could call it DK Gum!

Ewe, that is a big pet peeve of mine. People who spit their gum out anywhere, and everywhere !  (It is right up there with not picking up dog poo) I agree with everyone about teaching her the leave it command. However the mean evil side of me would get some rubber gloves, pick up some of the discarded gum wads, and stick it to his apartment door !
